The themes of the 39th conference of the Syrian Society of Ophthalmologists and Eye Surgery, which started today, focused on strabismus, eye diseases in children, plastic and refractive surgery, retinal and corneal problems, glaucoma and cataracts.
The agenda of the conference, which will be held at the Ebla Hotel in Damascus and will continue until the 25th of this month, includes 94 scientific lectures and a presentation of a number of studies, research and clinical cases through 17 sessions with the participation of Arab and foreign doctors.
In his speech, the Minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Al-Ghobash, referred to the role of conferences in exchanging experiences, information and ideas, and learning about the new in ophthalmology in terms of modern research and development of treatment methods and ways to improve performance to provide the best services to patients.
Dr. Al-Ghubash pointed out that the number of hospitals affiliated with the Ministry of Health that provide in-kind services reached 13, including 3 specialized in ophthalmology and surgery, which provided more than 20,000 services during the first quarter of this year, and there are many health centers that provide treatment and diagnostic services related to ophthalmology.
The association's president, Dr. Ramez Tawashi, drew attention to the importance of external participation in exchanging experiences, pointing out that the topics of the conference's lectures and sessions are rich and varied to include the most prominent issues related to the newness of this specialty.
The specialist in ophthalmology and surgery, Dr. Buthaina Al Sheikha, spoke about refractive surgery through LASIK operations in terms of compensation for the use of glasses and lenses, stressing that surgery in this field has witnessed great development through newly applied techniques, and a study was prepared on this that included a number of patients from Al-Mujtahid Hospital.
Dr. Joseph Abu Hijleh, who resides in the United States of America, praised the progress of ophthalmology in Syria despite the difficulties imposed by the terrorist war in the health sector, pointing out that scientific conferences contribute to restoring bridges of communication between expatriate doctors and their mother country and exchanging experiences.
From Egypt, the specialist Dr. Alaa Al-Dinosauri gave a lecture on the treatment of keratoconus diseases, in which he focused on the results of modern technologies, stressing that the conference is a space for scientific discussion and presentation of clinical cases that enrich the participants from specialists and graduate students.
The conference is accompanied by a medical exhibition that includes the latest medical devices and technologies related to eye diseases and surgery, in addition to the products of a number of pharmaceutical companies.
The inauguration was attended by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, Dr. Bassam Ibrahim, and the Minister of Social Affairs and Labor, Muhammad Seif El-Din.
