"Worryingly quiet": Vaccination demand in Bavaria has slumped drastically

Vaccination centers in Bavaria don't have much to do.

The demand for corona vaccines is falling.

In autumn, however, that could quickly change again.

Regensburg/Munich – The rush for the coronavirus vaccination was extremely large.

Not least in the winter of 2021/22, when it came to the booster vaccination.

But the demand for a corona vaccine has collapsed immensely - also in Bavaria around Regensburg.

• Since the beginning of the vaccination campaign, at least 63.3 million people (76.2 percent of the total population) in Germany have been immunized.

• At least 51.2 million people have received one or two booster shots.

• According to official figures, 75.1 percent of Bavarians have received at least one injection.

"Worryingly quiet": Vaccination demand around Regensburg has fallen extremely

The trend is downwards: This was the result of a random request from municipalities in Lower Bavaria and the Upper Palatinate, as reported by the BR.

Compared to March 2022, the number of vaccinations administered in vaccination centers has fallen by around 80 to 90 percent.

As examples, districts such as Cham and Deggendorf as well as the vaccination centers in Amberg and Sulzbach-Rosenberg are mentioned in the report.

Sebastian Schaller, managing director of the BRK district association Amberg-Sulzbach, described it as "worryingly quiet" to the BR.

"We now have less than 100 vaccinations per week in our vaccination locations together," he explained.

The employees who are still on site have “very, very little to do”.

The number of employees has already been reduced.

Just like in Weiden and the district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab.

At the beginning of July, the staff in Amberg and Sulzbach-Rosenberg are to be further reduced.

Corona in Bavaria: Vaccination demand could increase in autumn

According to Schaller, there could be an increasing demand for corona vaccinations in the fall.

Then the capacities could be increased again - "in a relatively short time".

That means exactly: In “two to four weeks”, as Schaller told BR.

The concern about the next Corona autumn is great.

Last but not least, Germany is in the middle of the third Corona summer, including a new sub-variant BA.5.

Virologist Christian Drosten expects “very high numbers of cases” and warned of a new wave after the summer holidays.

Last but not least, Health Minister Karl Lauterbach predicted a “difficult autumn”.

Regarding the coronavirus pandemic, he expects a new vaccine adapted to the variants to be available in September.

The Bavarian Health Minister Klaus Holetschek (CSU) also wants to be prepared for the fall.

In view of a possible corona wave, he presented a five-point plan for Bavaria.
