His arrest is said to have been 15 years ago - now the Afghan Assadullah Harun can leave Guantanamo. Apparently only one of his compatriots is still in the US prison camp in Cuba.

One of the last Afghan prisoners from the Guantanamo prison camp is free.

Assadullah Harun will return to his family after years in captivity, the spokesman for the incumbent Taliban government said.

"We would also like to thank our brother country Qatar for paving the way in this regard," Sabiullah Mujahid said in a statement.

Harun's lawyer confirmed the release to the dpa news agency.

According to the Afghanistan Analysts Network think tank, his client was arrested 15 years ago in Afghanistan.

The controversial Guantanamo prison camp is located in Cuba at the US naval base Guantanamo Bay.

At times almost 800 people were imprisoned there.

The camp was set up by Republican President George W. Bush after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks to hold suspected Islamist terrorists without trial.

This was seen internationally as a violation of the rule of law and triggered sharp protests.

The name of the last Afghan detained in Guantanamo is Mohammad Rahim.

He is said to have been tortured in captivity.

According to his lawyer, there were never any charges.

"Information on Rahim is particularly sparse because the US has classified him as a 'senior' prisoner and has classified much information about him as classified," a report on the man said.
