The Tölz section of the German Alpine Club recently set up a team to identify sources of CO2 emissions and then act accordingly.

Their goal is to be carbon neutral by 2023.

Bad Tölz –

The German Alpine Club has set itself a major goal: as the largest mountaineering association in the world, it wants to become climate-neutral by 2030.

The Tölzer Section with its more than 8,000 members is also following this ambitious path.

In a statement, the section now announces that it has recently set up a climate protection team for this purpose.

From now on, this group will be responsible for the topics of nature conservation, climate neutrality and sustainability.

The first milestone is to achieve a 30 percent reduction in emissions by 2026.

First milestone: 30 percent reduction in emissions by 2026

“Our section has almost 60 group leaders.

During excursions, activities and the like, they note everything to do with the topic of CO2 emissions.

For example, in terms of mobility, the arrival and departure, the chosen means of transport and the distance are recorded, and the type and number of overnight stays and meals,” explains Kilian voice from Tölzer AV when asked by our newspaper.

The group leaders would then pass this data on to the climate protection team.

"And we take care of the most accurate recording of emissions within our section," says Stimm, explaining the procedure.

DAV climate protection team: Various areas are examined

For this purpose, the new climate team is divided into different areas.

Section board member Benedikt Hirschmann is dedicated to climbing, the head of the office, Anke Ellmann, is responsible for the groups, Tom Hesslinger for courses and tours, Wilma Schenk for everything to do with mountain biking and Max Nichtl for recording emissions at the Tölzer Hütte .

The team's coordinators are Christiane Danner and I," reports Stimm.

The top priority for their project is: “Avoid before reducing before compensating.” Stimm explains: “This means that we use the results to see which emissions are completely avoidable.” If something cannot be completely avoided, he would like to DAV are considering how to reduce CO2 emissions.

"The last pillar available to us is compensation,"

says Voice.

In other words: “Everything that we can actively promote that contributes to climate neutrality and thus offsets our unavoidable emissions.

An example of this would be the planting of new trees.

The new team has already carried out initial actions in the name of climate protection.

These include, for example, a climate hike on the Schafreiter, which took place in May, as part of the "Climate Spring Oberland" and a geocaching family tour on the Sunntratn.

Further campaigns are currently being planned, such as a tree planting campaign in autumn.
