Heavy rainfall in May caused huge water damage in the basement of the Markt Schwaben secondary school.
The renovation will be extensive and expensive.
Markt Schwaben - The damage is high, but now it is being rehabilitated: After heavy rain at the beginning of May, rooms in the basement of the Lena Christ Realschule in Markt Schwaben were flooded.
Around 360 square meters were under water.
Three classrooms, a storage room for musical instruments, three sanitary facilities, a cleaning room and the hallway are affected.
The rooms are largely locked.
"It's also difficult for the school," says the district office.
The cost of the building damage is estimated at around 250,000 euros.
"A rough house number," according to the assessment.
The good news is that insurance will probably pay for it.
A replacement procurement for inventory and instruments has not yet been precisely defined, as has now become clear in the responsible committee of the district council.
Work will probably last until November
Schedule for the renovation: The noisy demolition and disposal work was to be carried out during the school holidays during the summer holidays.
The work could be completed by the end of the autumn holidays in November.
Flashback: It was the night of May 5th, a Thursday.
Heavy rain.
As the responsible employees in the district office explained, significant amounts of water came from the roof.
However, the sewer line in the basement was clogged with solids such as wet wipes and feminine hygiene items.
There was a backlog.
The water flowed back from the gully in the boys' toilet.
The result was a flood.
The damage was only recognized in the morning, meaning that the area was flooded for around five to seven hours.
According to the district office, three caretakers and the cleaning company sucked off and disposed of all the waste water with wet vacuum cleaners and cleaning machines as an immediate measure.
Insulation material has become soaked
But by then the damage had already been done.
According to the expert, it was no longer possible to dry the floor structure "from a technical point of view".
The insulating material had become soaked.
The refurbishment concept therefore states: dismantling and disposal of the existing floor structure up to the upper edge of the floor slab.
Room air clearance measurements for possible mold spores are listed in the plan.
A renewal of the entire floor structure is planned.
Before that, the classrooms have to be cleared out and furniture and blackboards have to be stored temporarily.
It is also about a new screed and the sealing to the floor slab.
The plan also includes repairs to plasterboard, new linoleum flooring and tiles in the toilets.
Finally painting work.
