An aircraft bomb from the Second World War was found in an industrial area near Günzburg.

It cannot be defused - it had to be blown up.

Update from June 23, 11:40 a.m.:

The bomb has now been detonated, the police reports.

At 10.25 a.m. the time had come, the blasting went according to plan.

For safety reasons, the busy A8 and federal highway 16 were temporarily closed, and the Legoland amusement park was partially evacuated.

The bans have now been lifted.

First report from June 22nd:

Günzburg – Air bombs from the Second World War are still being found in Bavaria again and again.

These remnants of the devastating war are now also referred to as duds - when they were dropped over the Free State around 80 years ago, they did not explode.

There can be various reasons for this.

But regardless of this, they also pose a danger in the present, since one cannot rule out that they will eventually fulfill their original purpose and cause serious damage.

Such a bomb has now been found in Günzburg - it must be blown up in a controlled manner.

This creates severe limitations.

The dramatic consequences of an uncontrolled detonation of a World War II bomb could only be seen in Munich at the end of last year.

Therefore, a controlled demolition under the supervision of specialists is now pending.

In order not to endanger anyone during the blast, a restricted zone is set up.

It surrounds the site of the blast in a radius of half a kilometer.

This not only includes large parts of the commercial area, but also a section of the A8 and the "Legoland" leisure park, its holiday village and the federal highway 16.

The exclusion zone applies from 7 a.m. on Thursday 23 June.

Traffic between Günzburg and Burgau is to be closed on the A8.

The police emphasized that massive traffic obstructions must be expected in the greater Günzburg area by 11:00 a.m.

"We are asked, if possible, to drive around the area mentioned on a large scale in the period described above," says the press report.
