The State Platform for Peace NATO No, made up of various associations against the organization of the North Atlantic Treaty, has started this Friday a campaign of protests for the summit to be held in Madrid next week.

The call, with the slogan

Summit for Peace, NATO NO

, will last the entire weekend and will be attended by Enrique Santiago, Secretary of State for the 2030 Agenda, who will participate in one of the events scheduled for this Saturday.

Other members of the United Left (IU), Podemos and the Communist Party will also attend.

The manifesto

calls for the "dissolution" of the organization and the "dismantling" of the entire Spanish military industry.

Among the planned activities are several discussion tables, which will deal with the security of States, the role of women in armed conflicts or the role of NATO in the current war in Ukraine and in the international context.

The events will culminate on Sunday with a demonstration at noon that will cross Madrid from the Atocha Station to the Plaza de España.

This NATO summit comes in the middle of the Russian invasion of Ukraine that began on February 24, which highlighted the differences between the two Executive parties after the majority of the ministers of United We Can spoke out against sending arms to the Ukrainian resistance and in favor of a diplomatic solution.

However, the presence of representatives of Podemos will be very small compared to that of other leftist forces.

Only Lucía Muñoz, a deputy in Congress, will attend, who will participate this Friday along with Sira Rego —

number two

of the United Left — in the first day, which will take place in the Marcelino Camacho auditorium.

On behalf of IU, the member of the Executive Eva García Sempere, the MEP Manuel Pineda and the person in charge of the International area, Jon Rodríguez, will attend.

The Minister of Consumption, Alberto Garzón, has not yet announced whether or not he will attend any of the events this weekend.

Enrique Santiago, Secretary General of the Communist Party, as well as Secretary of State, has ratified his support for the dissolution of NATO: “Let no one be surprised that the Spanish Communist Party supports the solution of conflicts, calls for the dissolution of alliances military and ask for the construction of peace alliances”.

Defense Minister Margarita Robles recalled this Friday that 83% of Spaniards support Spain's membership in NATO, according to a barometer from the Elcano Royal Institute.

In addition, in the face of the presence of members of United We Can in these protests against the Atlantic Alliance, she has assured that the government's position is marked by the president, Pedro Sánchez, and the ministers of Foreign Affairs and Defense, both in socialist hands.
