A burning Tesla has posed a major problem for the Sacramento Fire Department.

Only thanks to a trick and an unusually large amount of water did the experts get the problem under control.

Sacramento – Electromobility is considered a climate-conscious future technology.

However, if the lithium-ion batteries installed in an electric car burst into flames, the fire is difficult to extinguish.

The fire department of the city of Sacramento in the US state of California recently made this experience.

Tesla Model S goes up in flames - fire brigade before heavy use

In an Instagram post, the firefighters describe their extensive work on a burning Tesla Model S. The electric car, which had previously been damaged in an accident, was parked in a junkyard near Sacramento for dismantling when it caught fire.

The rescue workers who were called were initially able to contain the fire, but not completely extinguish it, as the fire always reignited in the battery compartment.

The firefighters then tried to put the burning Tesla on its side and extinguish the fire directly in the battery compartment - but without success: the battery in the electric car kept igniting due to the residual heat, the firefighters report.

Finally they resorted to a new method: the rescue workers dug a pit, pushed the Tesla in and filled the pit with water.

In this way, the battery compartment could be flooded and the vehicle completely extinguished.

Sacramento Fire Department spokesman Parker Wilbourn

told the

Washington Post that this method saved water and prevented runoff of contaminated water.

Tesla on fire: Firefighters need 17,000 liters of water when deployed

Nevertheless, the fire brigade, which was called for the first time to an e-car fire, claims to have used around 4,500 gallons of water – that's around 17,000 liters.

For comparison: With a burning burner, around 500 to 1500 liters are usually sufficient to extinguish the fire.

Even if e-cars catch fire very rarely and only if they have been damaged before, fires are usually much more difficult to extinguish.

"If an e-car battery catches fire, an enormous fire output is to be expected - because it is no less with a battery than with a ruptured tank," says Karl-Heinz-Knorr, Vice President of the German Fire Brigade Association, to the ADAC.

They are working on possible solutions to counter e-car fires.

One of them: large fire blankets to completely cover a burning vehicle and smother the flames.

This gives the fire brigade time and increases the scope for action, explains the ADAC.

There are also training courses for firefighters all over Germany - due to the increasing popularity of e-cars, the number of fires is expected to increase.
