The chronology of the massacre at the Uvalde primary school minute by minute reflects the slow response of the police

Almost a month after the tragedy, this is what we know about how one of the worst school massacres in the country's history unfolded.


The massacre at the elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, in which 19 children and two teachers died at the hands of a single armed person, has left a community in mourning and in search of answers for the action of the police, which took 77 minutes to neutralize the threat.

Almost a month after the tragedy, this is what we know about how one of the worst school massacres in the country's history unfolded.

  • 11:00 am

The attacker writes three messages on Facebook's private messaging app to a teenager in Germany that he met online.

He first tells her that he is going to kill his grandmother, then tells her that he already did it, and finally writes that he is going to shoot up a school, without specifying which one.

Shortly after, her grandmother manages to cross the street and asks for help.

She is transported to a hospital by helicopter with a gunshot wound to her face.

She is still in recovery.

  • 11:28 a.m.

The killer crashes his truck into a ditch next to Robb Elementary School.

He gets out of the car armed with a rifle and carrying ammunition in a vest.

He shoots two people outside a funeral home four times, hitting no one, and walks to school.

  • 11:29 a.m.

A teacher leaves the school through a back door on the west side.

She heads to her car for food and on the way back she sees the wrecked truck and the attacker heading towards the elementary school, armed with a rifle.

He calls 911 and tells them what he just saw.

She enters the school and removes the stone that she had put up to keep the door open.

She closes the door behind her, but it doesn't lock, something she was unaware of at the time, Steve McGraw, director of the Texas Department of Public Safety, explained June 21.

The police receive the first reports of the 911 on the attacker in the vicinity of the school and the funeral home.
