On Friday afternoon, 73 graduates received their high school diploma in the auditorium of the Welfen-Gymnasium in Schongau.

Schongau - Powerful big band sound heralded the graduation ceremony in the Welfen-Gymnasium.

"Gonna fly now" from the movie "Rocky" echoed through the auditorium.

The young musicians accompanied the event under the direction of Andreas Immler.

Actually, he only needs to quote the foreword of the high school newspaper, said headmaster Bernhard O'Connor in his speech: "It's awesome, we've done our high school diploma." There were some who in the past would not have dared to dream of ever getting their certificate in to hold hands.

There were ups and downs. The graduates should now be justifiably proud of what they have achieved.

He was allowed to hand out 73 school-leaving certificates – while a sentence from his first-class certificates was read out to each student to a great deal of laughter.

"The overall grade point average of 2.1 speaks for itself," said O'Connor in praise of "one of the most successful classes of recent years".

The headmaster also emphasized the social commitment of numerous high school graduates.

He gave the graduates two personal life experiences to take with them: "In every change there is also a piece of luck." And "not only the straight line leads to the goal".

Schongau's second mayor, Daniela Puzzovio, agreed: Opportunities should be used, even if you actually had a different path in mind.

"Stay curious."

A sworn community of destiny - "me and 20 black tiles"

Teacher Corinna Konstas didn't actually want to mention the "C-word", but she couldn't help but recall the adverse circumstances that the high school graduates had to contend with.

"As a student, I would have chopped off my hand rather than calling a teacher or sending a message." But that was exactly what was required in distance learning and worked well, she thanked the students for their trust.

"We have grown into a sworn community of destiny - me and 20 black tiles," she said with a smile and laughter.

The students had probably preferred to turn off their cameras during video calls.

"Strange" and yet "incredibly good" it feels to hold the high school diploma in your hands, said high school graduates Vianne Wenninger and Annalena Wiedemann in their joint speech.

Only so far away, school days were finally over in the blink of an eye.

They had learned that you can reach your goal better and faster in a group, they praised the team spirit.

“Now everyone will go their own way.

But we hope to see each other again sometime, somewhere.”
