A one-year-old toddler from the village of Gvul in the Galilee was found dead after being run over by a vehicle.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the toddler crawled from the door of her home, which is on the side of the road, and a driver driving down the street hit her.

She was fatally wounded and taken to the Nahariya Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead after resuscitation attempts.

Traffic inspectors from the Israel Police detained the offending driver and began investigating the circumstances of the accident.

The hospital said that upon arrival, the baby was taken to the shock room.

"Unfortunately, a few minutes later the doctors were forced to determine her death," the hospital said, "We share the family's grief and embrace her in her difficult hours."

Over the weekend, it was reported that since the beginning of 2022, 173 people have been killed on the country's roads.

In 2021, there was an 11 percent increase in the number of fatalities in road accidents compared to the previous year, and a 16 percent increase in the number of fatal accidents compared to 2018-2020.

The National Road Safety Authority states that children aged 0-14 are in the highest risk group of being injured as pedestrians in road accidents, for reasons related to both their behavior and parental responsibility.
