First the heat - then the lightning?

According to a weather expert, Germany must prepare for severe weather that could follow the high temperatures.

Sunday was the hottest day of the year.

  • Danger of forest fires

    in

    Germany

: A disaster was declared in the Potsdam-Mittelmark district.

  • Hottest day

    of the

    year

: With temperatures of up to 39.2 degrees, Sunday was the hottest day of the year so far.

  • DWD

    measures

    new German record

in the second decade of June: Preliminary measurements showed 38.7 degrees in Cottbus.

Update from June 20, 6.45 a.m .:

After the heat, the week starts with rain on the last day of the calendar spring in large parts of Germany.

The German weather service announced early Monday morning that showers and sometimes heavy thunderstorms were to be expected in the central parts of the country well into the morning.

In the south and southeast it will remain mostly dry for the time being.

In the course of the day there will also be individual showers in the north and east.

In the afternoon, individual, sometimes strong thunderstorms can also be expected in the south, which will move towards the Alps in the evening.

It should be 17 to 24 degrees in the northern half, 27 to 33 degrees in the very south.

On the night of Tuesday there will be individual showers or thunderstorms in the north-east and in the very south, which will then subside quickly.

It's getting colder, the lows are between seven and ten degrees.

First heat, then lightning: After the hottest day of the year, thunderstorms are expected in many parts of Germany

Update from June 19, 9:57 p.m .:

Sunday was the hottest day of the year so far with up to 39.2 degrees.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the maximum value was measured in Cottbus (Brandenburg) and Dresden-Strehlen (Saxony).

It was similarly warm in Hoyerswerda in Saxony: the temperature there climbed to 39.0 degrees.

However, this is not a German temperature record: According to the DWD, 41.2 degrees Celsius were measured on July 25, 2019 at stations in Duisburg and Tönisvorst (near Krefeld).

Meanwhile, fires were raging in Brandenburg.

Two rapidly spreading forest fires drove several hundred people from their homes in Brandenburg on Sunday.

In Treuenbrietzen, southwest of Berlin, around 600 residents had to leave the three districts of Tiefenbrunnen, Frohnsdorf and Klausdorf.

In addition to the current heat, the emergency services were particularly concerned about the strong wind.

The city of Treuenbrietzen announced on Sunday afternoon that the current wind conditions had led to an expansion of the area of operation.

Heat wave in Germany: German heat record broken for the second decade of June

Update from June 19, 5:20 p.m .:

According to the weather service, the preliminary peak value was 38.7 degrees at a weather station in the eastern Brandenburg city of Cottbus.

If this is confirmed, it would mean a new German record for the so-called second decade of June.

The previous maximum value for this time was measured in 2002 with 38.3 degrees in the Rhineland.

Climate expert on heat wave: "Extreme is becoming the new normal"

Update from June 19, 2:40 p.m.:

According to the environmental organization Greenpeace, the "actual motor" behind the current heat wave in large parts of Europe is the progressing climate change.

"Extreme is becoming the new normal," explained their climate expert Karsten Smid in Hamburg.

It had never been so hot and dry in Europe so early in the year.

Smid referred to the persistently extremely high temperatures in Spain and France, as well as the current hot weekend in this country.

Germany is not prepared for the consequences of the climate crisis, so a massive expansion of political efforts to contain climate change is necessary.

In principle, the political answer to the development is “obvious” and consists of a rapid phase-out of coal, oil and gas, and the rapid expansion of renewable energies.

Heat wave: "Drink a lot of water" and be careful when bathing - official bodies warn of dangers

Update from June 19, 1 p.m.:

“Drinking a lot of water is a must,” said Federal Interior Minister Thomas Strobl (CDU), who drew attention to the dangers of the heat, especially for older people.

"Pay particular attention to drinking enough fluids for yourself and for others."

Caution is also required for summer leisure activities;

nationwide, sometimes fatal bathing accidents are reported.

The DLRG Rhineland-Palatinate explicitly warned against bathing in rivers.

According to a spokesman, for example, "bathing in the Rhine [...] is about as safe as riding a bicycle on the motorway." Bathers could easily be caught by the current and pulled into the middle of the river.

"The current conditions there are so difficult that even experienced swimmers hardly have a chance to swim against them."

Shady places are in great demand: the temperatures continue to rise.

Weather: Heat in Germany reaches record levels - risk of forest fires is extremely high

Update from June 19, 12:15 p.m .:

Today’s temperatures would reach up to 38 degrees from North Baden to the Kaiserstuhl, the

DWD

reports .

Even in the mountains, the thermometer should show up to 32 degrees.

Cooling from thunderstorms is only locally and with a low probability in sight, but could be accompanied by heavy rain and hail in the southern Black Forest, on the Swabian Jura and in Upper Swabia.

Furthermore, there is currently a high to very high risk of forest fires across the country.

Weather in Germany: warning of gusts of wind and sometimes extreme heat stress

Update from June 19, 10:50 a.m .:

The

DWD

is currently warning of gusts of wind in large parts of eastern Germany.

At the same time, heat must be expected from the south-west to the east of the country, and in some cases extreme heat stress in the Upper Rhine Graben.

In addition, increased UV radiation is to be expected in the southwestern half.

The Federal Ministry of Health points out that "particularly when [...] there is high humidity and little or no wind blowing", heat leads to "additional stress on the cardiovascular system", which leads to "e.g. heat exhaustion, heat cramps , heat stroke or dehydration.

"Particularly at risk in the heat," according to the ministry, are "people who already suffer from diseases of the cardiovascular system or respiratory diseases, people over 65 years of age, babies and small children as well as people who, for example, spend a lot of time outdoors in the heat for work reasons. The heat-induced diseases are "sometimes life-threatening".

The danger would be increased by the lack of fluids due to increased sweating.

Therefore, stay in the shade, make sure you drink enough fluids - you should avoid coffee and alcohol - and avoid physical exertion if possible.

Weather: Risk of forest fires in Germany - disaster in the district of Potsdam-Mittelmark

Update from June 19, 6:42 a.m .:

After sweaty temperatures on Saturday, it could be even hotter in some parts of Germany this Sunday.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), up to 38 degrees can be expected in Jena and Cottbus, but not only the two cities in Thuringia and Brandenburg could top the record set the day before - so far the hottest day of the year: also in Baden-Württemberg and Bavaria, as well as Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt, similarly high temperatures can be expected.

A disaster was even declared near the town of Treuenbrietzen in Brandenburg, because a forest fire there is getting worse and worse due to the acute drought and heat.

The midsummer weather drove many people to lakes or to the outdoor pool on Saturday.

According to DWD information, the highest values at the Waghäusel-Kirrlach measuring stations on the Upper Rhine (Baden-Württemberg) and in Bad Kreuznach (Rhineland-Palatinate) were registered in the late afternoon with 37.1 degrees.

Due to the intense heat and lack of rain, there is still a high risk of forest fires in some parts of Germany.

The district administrator of the Potsdam-Mittelmark district declared a disaster because of a forest fire, said a fire department spokesman in Brandenburg/Havel.

The Bundeswehr took part in fighting the forest fire with a transport helicopter and announced on Twitter that they had dropped around 40,000 liters of water.

But the heat chaos does not threaten everywhere and not all day on Sunday.

After a hot start to the day, according to the forecast, more and more clouds are likely to swell from the afternoon, especially over the middle, in the south-west German mountains and in the Alps.

Local thunderstorms and severe weather are possible.

Weather in Germany: the hottest day of the year - up to 37.1 degrees

Update from June 18, 9 p.m.:

Saturday was the hottest day of the year so far with up to 37.1 degrees.

According to the German Weather Service (DWD), the highest values were measured late Saturday afternoon at the Waghäusel-Kirrlach stations on the Upper Rhine (Baden-Württemberg) and in Bad Kreuznach (Rhineland-Palatinate).

Behind the 37.1 degrees measured there, according to DWD information from Saturday evening, were Möhrendorf-Kleinseebach in the Middle Franconian district of Erlangen-Höchstadt (Bavaria) with 36.8 degrees, followed by Trier-Zewen (Rhineland-Palatinate) with 36.6 degrees and Kahl am Main in the Lower Franconian district of Aschaffenburg on the Bavarian-Hessian border with 36.5 degrees.

The German temperature record is still a long way from all these values.

According to the DWD, 41.2 degrees Celsius were measured on July 25, 2019 at stations in Duisburg and Tönisvorst (near Krefeld).

A temperature record of 42.6 degrees measured in Lingen on the same day was later canceled afterwards.

The values from this Saturday are also not record values for June: at the end of June 2019, values of around 39 degrees were measured in several places.

Weather in Germany: heat wave on Saturday

First report from June 18:

Munich – The first heat wave of the summer has Germany firmly under control.

But for how long, and what comes after that?

According to meteorologist Björn Alexander from

Wetter.de

, some parts of the country have to be prepared for thunderstorms.

Alexander explains that after the hot weekend, the temperatures are going down slightly at first.

"We'll definitely leave the peak of the heat behind us." However, the summer is not over so quickly.

After the heat, strong storms await us, according to the expert: "Partly heavy showers and thunderstorms up to full-blown storms are always conceivable with such air masses," he says - even if the weather computers are currently not necessarily showing their intensity .

"But they can't be ruled out.

Mainly because the heat will again be pushed aside by cooler Atlantic air on Wednesday and Thursday.

At the latest on Thursday it will cool down noticeably - according to the current status - all the way down to the south."

Weather in Germany: DWD with warning - "Hail and heavy gusts of wind"

The German weather service also predicts severe weather.

The website states that individual thunderstorms fell over the south-west of Germany, and with a “lower probability also over the western mountains”, and that “storms caused by heavy rain” “cannot be ruled out”.

There will also be thunderstorms on Wednesday “south of an Eifel-Lausitz line” and “above all over the mountains with a risk of thunderstorms due to heavy rain, in the south also due to larger hail and (heavy) gusts of wind.”

How cool does it get after the heat and where?

Alexander explains: “The majority of the models still see between 20 degrees in the north and 30 degrees on the Upper Rhine for Wednesday.

On Thursday it will therefore be a maximum of 17 to 26 degrees.

In addition to sunny phases, there are also showers and thunderstorms in some areas.”

Weather in Germany: It stays warm in the south and east

All in all, we can expect “the summer of the Central European kind, which could probably stay with us towards the end of the month.

Here, the heat advantages lie in the south and east, while it should remain fresher and generally changeable towards the west and north.”

In the south, on the other hand, it will initially remain warmer, says Alexander: "South of the Main line it will continue to be very warm to hot with 26 to 32 degrees on Monday, before local downpours of thunderstorms will cool things down a bit.

Otherwise, at temperatures of 17 to around 25 degrees, airing is the order of the day.” The warmth will spread north again on Tuesday, the calendar beginning of summer, according to the meteorologist.

"Up to the north again with highs of 24 to 33 degrees.

Only the coasts are cooler in the sea wind.”
