"Free night for the climate" is the name of a campaign by the German Alpine Association - anyone who travels at least 90 percent by public transport can look forward to a free overnight stay in a hut.

Important: If you want to take advantage of the campaign, you must be a member of the DAV.

In the Karwendel, the Falkenhütte and the Lamsenjochhütte are involved.

"The campaign is very well received, we have an incredible number of guests," says Claudia Rackwitz-Hartmann, who runs the Falkenhütte together with her husband Robert.

"I think it's great that anyone who takes it upon themselves to make the journey by train and bus a little longer should get a reward." And maybe even a few people who don't usually go to the mountains would be encouraged to do it once to try.

Arrive publicly, sleep for free - campaign only for DAV members

The starting point for a hike to the Falkenhütte is easily accessible by public transport.

"For example, you can take the train to Lenggries and from there take the mountaineer bus to the Eng." The latter is used very well.

"It's a great thing, because otherwise there would be even more traffic."

Anyone who arrives at the hut is asked whether they have arrived in public.

"Many didn't even know about the campaign." They would then have to put their name and address on a list, which then goes to the German Alpine Association (DAV).

Important: If you want to take advantage of the campaign, you must be a member of the DAV.

The offer has already been very well received at the Lamsenjochhütte, reports tenant Katrin Stadler.

"A lot of people come." Most travel via the Eng or Vomp and use buses to get to the starting point.

New tenant for Lamsenjochhütte

Stadler took over the Lamsenjochhütte from the Rackwitz family this season.

She worked there last year and is now the boss herself.

"There's a lot of organizational work to be done," she reports.

But the season got off to a really good start.

This is also reported by Claudia Rackwitz-Hartmann from the Falkenhütte.

“We are open on June 4th for day business and on the 15th for overnight stays.

The Pentecost holidays were just great.” There are “incredibly good” booking numbers.

“People are really pushing it out.” She is very happy that things are going so well again.

In addition to the Falkenhütte, the Rackwitz' also run the Enzianhütte in Fieberbrunn.

Taking over the Lamsenjochhütte last year was, so to speak, a test, explains Rackwitz-Hartmann.

"But we noticed that it couldn't be lifted." They are glad that Katrin Stadler, a proven force, is following in their footsteps.

There are no plans to take over another hut for the time being, says Claudia Rackwitz-Hartmann with a laugh: "Two huts are enough."

"Free night for the climate"

The campaign runs until the end of 2022. Anyone who can prove that they are a DAV member and have used at least 90 percent public transport from their place of residence to get there will receive a free night in a shared room or camp.
