The plans to protect Erding from another flood have struck ditches.
But there was also something good about the debate.
Our comment on the weekend.
The year 2022 is likely to be decisive for flood protection in Erding.
The city has just decided on its concept for the ditches and wants to bring it into the approval process this year.
The state of affairs in the planning of the Free State for Sempt and Fehlbach is similar.
Nine years after the 2013 flood, a big step has finally been taken.
However, the flood protection in Erding has dug such deep ditches that a medium-sized flood could easily sink into them.
Neither the Sempt nor the Graben residents are really satisfied.
The last word has by no means been spoken.
It is therefore the right way to go into the planning approval process for both projects.
In the case of the ditches, there is talk of planning errors, and Sempt does not understand the principle of walls instead of renaturation.
The planning approval is the right platform to check this objectively.
And even after that there is still the possibility to have a dish weighed.
Flood protection shows how complex everyday life has become.
Both sides come up with arguments that no normal person can check for correctness.
This leaves skepticism and doubts behind - unfortunately, they are probably sometimes very justified.
The good thing about the debates: they have revived democracy in Erding.
The BI members may - and this is legitimate - have acted out of self-interest.
They didn't make it easy for the planners.
That's the best way to get the best you can in the end, although there's never a one-size-fits-all solution.
