The Supreme Court of the United States yesterday (Friday) overturned the historic Row v. Wade ruling of 1973 that granted women in the country the right to abortion.

Such a coup is unprecedented, especially after 50 years.

The decision will allow more than half of the United States to ban abortions with immediate and long-term consequences for tens of millions of Americans.

Historically, the court has turned cases to grant more rights.

Yesterday he made the opposite decision, to limit the constitutional right that generations of Americans have grown up on and taken for granted.

As a result, states will once again ratify a ban or severe restrictions on abortions, actions that will change the state’s deep understanding of liberty, free choice and self-determination.

Now 26 countries are expected to do so immediately, or as quickly as possible.

Abortions will become illegal throughout the South and Midwest in the United States.

In these countries, women and other men will have to travel hundreds of miles to reach an abortion provider or perform an abortion at home.

However, laws prohibiting abortions do not apply to the entire state.

The United States will become a patchwork of laws, including bans and protections, because some democracies like California and New York have actually extended the right to abortion ahead of yesterday’s ruling as a precaution.

And yet, a new abortion ban puts the United States in line with only four countries in the world that have banned abortions since 1994, and the richest of them.

The others are Poland, El Salvador and Nicaragua.

More than half of U.S. women are of childbearing age - about 40 million - and now live in countries that do not support abortions. In most states, the ban will be enforced quickly. Michigan and others will enact bans immediately or within a month.

Another group of countries intends to ban abortions in early pregnancy - even before the woman even knows if she is pregnant.

One of them is Georgia, where abortions will be banned after only six weeks of pregnancy.

Other states like Texas already have bans in effect.

The most effective defense - federal law

The most effective defense against a state ban on abortions is federal law, which precedes state law.

According to surveys, 85% of Americans support such a law.

Such a law would require the support of a majority in the House of Representatives, and a majority of 60 votes in the Senate, and the signature of President Joe Biden.

Most members of the House of Representatives support the right to abortion, as does the White House.

The Republicans, however, blocked such a federal law in the Senate that is divided equally between the two camps.

Moreover, Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia crossed the lines and voted with Republicans against abortion.

That leaves 49 votes for Democrats, which is not enough to pass federal law.

In order to overcome the Senate, Democrats will have to achieve a landslide victory in the midterm elections in November.

But it is not yet clear what will happen then on the issue.
