EU Foreign Commissioner Joseph Burrell arrived in Tehran to try to break new ground in talks between Iran and the powers • The French government has called on the Iranians to take advantage of the visit to advance talks

France urged Iran today (Saturday) to take advantage of the visit of EU Foreign Commissioner Joseph Burrell to Tehran to try and achieve a breakthrough in negotiating a nuclear deal, while there is still a window of opportunity.

"We are ready to reach an agreement on this deal and we call on Iran to seize this diplomatic opportunity to conclude it now, while it is still possible," a statement from the French Foreign Ministry said.

Burrell arrived in Iran yesterday and is expected to return to Europe today.

The purpose of the visit was, according to the EU announcement, to try to push Tehran to sign an agreement to revive the nuclear deal with the world powers signed in 2015, which the United States withdrew from but is now seeking to save.

Tehran, for its part, said its focus on Burrell's visit was on easing sanctions, without directly mentioning the nuclear deal.

"Bilateral relations, regional and international issues, as well as the latest status of sanctions lifting will be discussed during the visit, which is part of the ongoing consultation between Iran and the EU," said ministry spokesman Said Khatibazda.
