He always enjoyed great popularity in the Tölzer Land.

Former Mayor Max Gast has now died at the age of 87.

He significantly shaped the history of Sachsenkam.

Sachsenkam -

Hardly anyone else in the history of Sachsenkam has shaped the place as much as Max Gast.

The 87-year-old died on Wednesday in the Asklepios Clinic in Bad Tölz.

His death caused deep sadness and sadness in the village.

He leaves behind a son and a daughter.

Born in Sachsenkamer, he has been a CSU member of the municipal council since 1966.

In 1978 he was elected mayor, a post he held for 30 years before retiring to private life in 2008.

"Max Gast was a born local politician," says his longtime deputy, Helmut Rührmair.

His creative period for the community began in the early 1960s, when he and other Sachsenkam landowners campaigned for land consolidation, which was not uncontroversial among farmers.

As a beneficial product of this, the Sachsenkam bypass was put into operation for the residents in 1978.

"I'll only go as far as you push me"

During the local government reform in 1972, Gast demonstrated a keen sense when, together with Reichersbeur mayor Hans Harrer and Greilings community leader Michael Gistl, he decided to set up an administrative community.

At the same time, Gast was quite a combative and critical spirit in the community meetings, who emphatically represented the interests of Sachsenkam.

Orders from higher authorities were first questioned and checked to see if there wasn't a better solution for Sachsenkam.

"The local councilors will certainly remember his motto: "I'm like a wheelbarrow when dealing with offices.

I'll only go as far as you push me."

"The highest yardstick for his actions was always the well-being of Sachsenkam," adds Rührmair.

And there was no mercy.

At the beginning of the 1990s, a report in the Tölzer Kurier about what later turned out to be false statistics about the amount of waste in the Sachsenkamer made him flush with anger.

In Sachsenkam the biggest "pig bears" was the title.

The editor-in-chief at the time apologized and pointed out that the waste disposal figures supplied had been incorrect.

The rumble could be heard several sessions later.

Max Gast had an eye for what was feasible.

The expansion of the commercial area and the settlement of the globally successful company HaWe, which not only flushes money into the municipal treasury, but also created numerous jobs and training positions, proved to be a brilliant move.

"Max Gast embodied Sachsenkam like no other, was networked in the clubs and met everyone with an open ear and a great sense of justice," characterizes his successor in the mayor's office, Hans Schneil.

As mayor, Gast has succeeded in turning the sleepy village of Kirchsee into a gem.

A master of subtle humor

He always countered critics who pointed out the municipality's high level of debt by pointing out that this created an infrastructure that is impressive.

The water supply with deep wells and elevated tanks, the redevelopment of the town centre, the construction of the kindergarten, the municipal cemetery, the sports hall, the expansion of the fire station and the purchase of an emergency vehicle, the financial participation in the construction of the school building and gymnasium in Reichersbeuern and last but not least the construction of the Sewerage and renovation of the sewage treatment plant in Bad Tölz.

These tasks ensured that the municipal treasury never overflowed.

Max Gast was not only a master of his citizens, but in his mischievous way a master of subtle humor.

He understood how to take the edge off problems in a humorous way and was able to laugh at himself like no other.

His straightforwardness, his open way of naming unpleasant things are characteristics that have made him known and loved beyond the confines of his community.

His advice is therefore also in demand across the country.

“His word carried weight, and his opinions carried weight.

Max was open and honest,” says his longtime companion Christoph Lettner.

"Sachsenkam was in good hands with him," adds Schneil.
