Elmau - The G7 summit in Elmau 2022 begins on Sunday (June 26).

Then numerous topics are on the agenda of the heads of state of the seven leading industrial nations and democracies in the world.

This year's summit is taking place in Germany, and the federal government has called for a determined fight for more food security in advance.

Ukraine and Russia are considered the "granaries of the world".

The Ukraine war therefore has far-reaching effects on the global food supply.

Because Russia is blocking the Black Sea ports, important grain deliveries are missing in many parts of the world.

Russia itself has not been a member of the summit since the Crimean invasion in 2014.

A quick solution to the problem of the Black Sea blockade is currently not in sight.

"Russia is deliberately using hunger as a weapon of war and is making the whole world hostage," said Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) about Vladimir Putin's actions.

Experts also believe that military intervention is currently unfeasible.

The German government therefore warned before the G7 summit that the global hunger crisis would worsen and called for a determined fight for food security.

According to Baerbock, around 345 million people are threatened by food shortages due to drought and crop failures caused by climate change and as a result of the corona pandemic.

"But only Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine turned a wave into a tsunami," said the Green politician.

G7 summit in Elmau 2022: Minister of Agriculture Özdemir for alternative routes for Ukrainian grain exports

Ukraine actually ships wheat and other grain through the Black Sea ports, with Odessa leading the way.

In view of the stalemate there, Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) now spoke out in favor of permanent alternative routes for grain exports from Ukraine.

As long as Russia's President Putin is in power, one must assume that the Black Sea is not a safe route.

It would also be a signal to calm down the world markets if larger quantities could be transported away safely.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, capacities on alternative routes are limited and expensive.

Around 20 million tons of grain are currently stored in Ukraine and are in danger of rotting.

Before Russia's war of aggression, Ukraine was exporting about five million tons of grain a month all over the world.

After the start of the war, exports fell to 350,000 tons, but according to the federal government they were back at 1.7 million tons in May.

In the short term, however, there is only limited potential for growth, according to Özdemir.

G7 participants are the countries USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Germany.

For them, there are numerous other topics on the agenda over the two days.

Among other things, it should be about the fair distribution of corona vaccines.

Had more people been vaccinated, 600,000 lives would have been saved, a recent study found.
