Sustainability should play an important role in the organization of the G7 summit.

But anyone looking at Garmisch-Partenkirchen these days will get a completely different impression.

A huge fleet of police patrol cars and energy guzzlers stir up doubts as to whether the love of nature is really meant seriously.

Many citizens are really annoyed.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Lilian Edenhofer takes it with humor: "I wasn't aware of how many different police vehicles there are.

Unbelievable, everything that is there is offered here.

G7 madness!”, writes the non-attached municipal councilor of the Free Voters on her Facebook page – and adds smugly: “Can you now rob a bank in the rest of Germany without any problems or something similar?”

In fact, shortly before the start of the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau (June 26 to 28), Garmisch-Partenkirchen resembles a fortress.

The police are relying on a large contingent to bring the top meeting of heads of state and government to the stage with as little disruption as possible - a nerve test for the locals, who are already suffering from the many restrictions.

In the market town, it feels like not a minute goes by without a car, minibus, truck or motorcycle coming towards you from the law enforcement officer.

The message to potential rioters is unmistakable: don't even try!

G7 summit in Schloss Elmau: Climate protection does not seem to be of great importance

However, climate protectors and nature lovers are anything but happy about the over-presence of the mobile law enforcement officers.

According to the accusation, this is in clear contradiction to the G7 claims.

Because the federal government has actually committed itself to holding its own events as climate-neutrally as possible.

Sustainability is not only a key topic on the G7 Agenda 2022, according to Berlin, but also an important organizational concern locally.

"Avoid, reduce, compensate" is the motto to keep the ecological footprint as small as possible.

How does it fit in, critics ask, that an armada of police cars - most of them with combustion engines - are constantly making their rounds in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, a number of helicopters are buzzing around and climate protection doesn't seem to be a priority.

There are reports, for example, of the running engines of parked company cars and diesel units.

Always present: the police in Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

G7 meeting in Schloss Elmau: conservationists recommend Scholz and Co. "a submarine"

Axel Doering, district chief of the Bund Naturschutz, can only shake his head: "Something like that is not climate-neutral feasible.

Completely impossible.” It is a mystery to him how one can speak of sustainability.

The former forest ranger is harsh on the police march: “The whole town and the district are being taken hostage.

That really annoys me.”

Doering is certain: A G7 summit has no place in this country, especially not in the highly sensitive nature reserve in the Elmauer valley.

His recommendation to the most powerful in the world: "You should take a submarine."

It sounds similar to Karina Winkler, spokeswoman for the local branch of the Greens: "For me, that's obviously not climate-neutral." According to the geographer, it would be a strong sign if officials were to rely more on electric cars or bicycles, for example.

G7 meets at Schloss Elmau: Police do not want to disclose the number of vehicles used

Lisa Poettinger, spokeswoman for the action alliance "Stop G7 Elmau", can no longer hear the ambitious sustainability goals in connection with the summit.

She considers this pure “greenwashing”, a PR strategy to put on a “green cloak”.

In general, she says, the G7 industrialized countries are primarily responsible for the current climate misery.

The Bavarian police are holding back on the sensitive issue with concrete statements.

The exact number of vehicles used is not revealed - "for tactical reasons," as spokeswoman Maria Enslin explains.

According to their information, the fleet includes “some electric vehicles”.

All trips are necessary, for example for property protection, to prevent damage to private and state property.

The possible scenarios range from graffiti scribblings to arson attacks.

According to Enslin, it may be necessary for the engines to remain on when the company car is stationary, among other things, in order to operate technical equipment.

And the aggregates were used for power supply, for example for light sources.

In principle, one falls back on the existing equipment.

For new purchases, the idea of sustainability was taken into account.
