A few thunderstorms and heavy rain had already passed over parts of Germany on Thursday, and other regions had to prepare for severe weather on Friday.

"The Qiara thunderstorm is moving from France to the British Isles and is shoveling muggy, warm air masses into the south and west of the country," said a meteorologist from the German Weather Service (DWD) in Offenbach on Thursday.

To the north and east of this, Hoch Frido ensures plenty of sunshine and temperatures that continue to rise.

The sky had already clouded over in many places from Thursday afternoon, thunderstorms with heavy rain and squalls were announced.

During the night of Friday, the thunderstorms spread, among other things in Baden-Württemberg, the storm caused a tragic incident.

A man and his dog were killed by a tree during a thunderstorm in Freiburg.

The 64-year-old was walking in a park with his wife and the hunting dog on Thursday evening when an oak tree and its roots suddenly fell over due to an approaching thunderstorm, the police said.

The woman was reportedly unharmed.

Weather in Germany: Storms over Freiburg ensure numerous operations

In Freiburg, a 30-meter tree fell on Thursday evening, burying two cars under it.

People were not injured.

Overall, there were around 30 weather-related police operations within one hour in the area of ​​responsibility of the Freiburg police headquarters.

It was said that mostly falling construction fences, falling bricks or falling trees were reported.

And also on Friday, many regions have to be prepared for showers, thunderstorms and local storms with heavy rain and sometimes hail.

As the DWD explains on its website, thunderstorms will cover a strip from Bavaria to North Rhine-Westphalia in the morning, with "local heavy rain of around 20 l/sqm in a short time and stormy gusts of up to 70 km/h (8 Bft)".

Thunderstorms cover Germany: Numerous regions have to be prepared for storms and rain

During the day, the storms will initially move in a strip from the eastern mountains to the north-west, later also in the south and west again.

Northeast of the Elbe it will probably stay dry until the evening, according to the DWD.

The temperatures on Friday will rise to a muggy 25 to 30 degrees, in the northeast up to 34 degrees.

Since it should initially remain dry there, according to the DWD, the risk of forest fires should rise again to the highest level.

According to the meteorologists, heavy showers and thunderstorms with a risk of severe weather due to heavy rain are to be expected on Saturday night, especially in the south-east and in the Alps.

Otherwise, the thunderstorms should gradually subside.
