Gröbenzell – Benjamin Reiser, Q11, from the Gymnasium Gröbenzell was chosen last weekend in front of around 400 spectators in Berlin as this year's national winner in the youth debating competition.
In the final round, three participants from Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia and Saxony debated alongside him.
In the past few months, they had qualified for the final days in Berlin from around 1,400 schools at school, regional and state level.
The 16-year-old Reiser won the competition for grades 10 to 13
when asked
"Should compulsory military service be introduced in Germany?"
In his argument he referred to the tension between the freedom of the individual and the common good.
According to Reiser, general service is not the appropriate measure to win over young people for sustainable social commitment.
He won over the jury, which included Sandra Maischberger and Ahmad Mansour,
through his powers of
persuasion
and the
breadth of his arguments .
The mentoring teacher at the Gröbenzell high school, Janina Rapp,
who accompanied Reiser, is
enthusiastic :
"I was impressed by the differentiated, appreciative and yet passionate debate in the national final.
I am very pleased for Benjamin and our school that he was able to convince me with a great performance.”
The
headmaster Boris Hack
l underlines the importance of “Youth debates”:
“In a democratic debate, it is important to look at different perspectives and to look for constructive solutions society elementary.
"
“Cool, mellow and confident”
The Bavarian Minister of Education, Michael Piazolo, commented on Reiser's victory: "We are very proud of Benjamin's outstanding performance.
When you look at how cool, calm and confident Benjamin presented himself in front of such a backdrop, you can only take your hat off.
Of course, such a performance does not fall from the sky.
My thanks also go to the teachers who have been supporting Benjamin for years”.
