The elite of the Mölkky athletes recently met in Erlangen-Bruck to hold the open German championship.

Four Hallbergmoosers were there.

Hallbergmoos

- their names: Ralph Mölkkenstern, Marja Mölkkedusa, Henrich Mölkkytaryan and Mätsch McMölkkster - in short: the HöllzbergMölkks team.

No, this isn't a joke.

But the wooden athletes tend to have a weird sense of humor and maybe a tiny bit of madness.

Above all, it's a lot of fun to play with.

(By the way: everything from the region is now also available in our regular Freising newsletter.)

Mölkky is a Finnish skill game that has a few fans in Germany and Europe.

The rules are very simple.

Achieving the coveted 50 points is an art.

You have to use a throwing stick to knock over twelve numbered playing sticks standing on edge.

If you get exactly fifty points, you win.

If you throw more than 50, you fall back to 25.

So far, throwing wood has been a pure after-work pleasure for them

The open German championship has been held in Erlangen-Bruck for years.

For the team from Hallbergmoos - real names Markus Beck, Liesa Löwenherz-Beck, Jörg Mangels and Thomas Mach - it was the first tournament.

Yes, even the first matches against real opponents.

So far, throwing wood has been a pure after-work pleasure for them.

In their free time, the quartet likes to do “mini challenges” and parlor games, which can sometimes be a little more unusual.

"Becki is very innovative and always finds something new," reports Mach.

Just like Mölkky, which he once saw for the first time at Schlag den Raab and adapted for Jörg Mangel's bachelor party.

There is now a Mölkky area in the yard of "Becki" and his wife Liesa: a paved sandy track with plenty of space for the wood.

“We heard there was a DM and signed up.

We actually wanted to do this in 2020, but it was only possible now,” reports Mach.

The street name was also a real challenge

At the DM, the four suddenly faced unexpected challenges: 38 degrees, scorching sun on the 32 fields of the FSV Bruck facility.

"And then also in Widerlichstrasse," remembers Mach with a wink.

A number of the 63 teams were significantly better equipped than the newcomers: with umbrellas, pavilions and other utensils to combat the heat.

The Hallbergers made up for that with team spirit.

And they had a trump card up their sleeve: their battle cry.

“On the second day of the tournament it was already known that after a clearly audible 'Ten, eleven, twelve' from one individual, an even more powerful 'Höllzbergmölkks!'

of the whole team followed - and let all participants know: The colleagues from Upper Bavaria in green have once again bagged a success." And visually the four were eye-catchers anyway: web designer Mach created his own team logo, based on the municipal coat of arms - just focus on wood instead of cattails.

They were also satisfied with the end result: Mach's goal "just don't finish last" - exceeded by miles.

After the games against Mölkkstoff, the Möllkschnitten and Mölkkytiere, the Hallbergers played their way into the 1/16 final.

In the best-of-5 mode, 22nd place jumped out.

"We were even tenth among the German teams," said Mach.

“There was no German team among the top seven.

The French and the Czechs set the tone”.

Even if you don't hear them as well as the "10,11,12 Höllzbergmölkks."
