Twenty people were killed in the city of East London, South Africa, in mysterious circumstances.

Police said that the bodies of young people aged between 18 and 20 were found lying on tables inside the Ineopenny Tavern night club in East London after they celebrated the end of exams, without evidence of the cause of death.

"The bodies of a number of young people have been found in East London, indicating that the circumstances of their death are currently unknown," the district police chief, Thempinkosi Kinana, told ENCA television.

Health Ministry spokesman Sianda Manan said: "We will conduct autopsies as soon as possible to determine possible causes of death.

For his part, the owner of the club said: "The place was full and it is expected that the stampede was the cause of death."

"We don't know if they were poisoned or something else happened," said Department of Roads and Safety spokesman Onathi Bengoz, adding that "the police are on the scene with forensic experts to investigate the causes that led to this tragic accident."

Ambulance and emergency services teams arrived at the scene and investigations are still underway to find out the circumstances of the accident and the causes of death.
