Aborting is a right: so it must be said

2022-06-26T10:55:30.453Z

We women (and the men who support us) have to systematically refuse to let our reproductive health be decided on the moral ground. Every woman has the right to decide about her body

If I were a young American girl I would delete any of those apps that measure monthly ovulation periods right now.

In fact, it is already being recommended through the networks that traces of any suspicion of pregnancy or any attempt to interrupt it be eliminated, because if the circumstance arises that a girl or a woman is accused of aborting any record related to that practice could be accepted as criminal evidence.

And there will be no mercy, even if it is the result of a rape, or for economic reasons, or for the health of the mother, or for malformation of the fetus.

Not to mention the will of women: that is something that no longer counts in the country of freedoms.

This involution has not happened overnight.

The conquest by the Republicans of the Supreme Court has been in the making for decades, since those days of Reagan in which the new republicanism began to be outlined or, so that we understand each other, the wild right that surrendered to the deregulatory forces of capital and the regulatory ones of morality, especially to the wishes of certain churches, such as the evangelical.

The right to abortion, with half a century of validity in the United States, was the prize most coveted by certain sectors.

One wonders what is the reason why a ban that the majority of American citizens do not support has ended up being imposed, how the right has achieved the most complicated thing in a democracy, which is the withdrawal of an already existing right.

This is undoubtedly Donald Trump's greatest victory, it is the gift promised to the evangelical churches, without whose support it would have been impossible for him to achieve power and which may well bring him an unprecedented comeback in the 2024 elections. It could be shocking that someone so immoral as Trump has based a large part of his triumph on faith if it were not for the fact that there is a handy biblical excuse for everything: Trump, the gulf, would be like that King David who after sinning abundantly redeems himself and fights against the forces of evil .

The thesis, clearly irrational, is supported by 80% of white evangelicals, who see Trump as the defender of Christian culture and venerate his authoritarian style to bring a degraded nation to heel.

They say that Biden can patch up the incidence of the law so that women find some way to be sovereign in terms of reproductive health, but the evil is already done and will reign for a long time.

The United States returns in leaps and bounds to the wild territory of the pioneers: freedom to possess weapons that are aimed against the innocent and laws to restrict the freedom of women.

With these two premises, who already dares to compose the soundtrack of the old country of dreams?

The question we must ask ourselves after this hard finding that rights are not eternal is what we can do to avoid seeing this setback replicated in our country.

In my opinion, we women (and the men who support us) have to systematically deny that our reproductive health, including planning and abortion, is settled on the moral ground.

Every woman has the right to decide about her body.

There is an individual freedom in which neither justice nor religion should interfere, and it so happens that this intimate right is essential so as not to condemn women to exclusion, poverty, death, or subordination, no more.

Emma Goldman, Gloria Steinem, Lucia Berlin, Claudia Piñeiro, Annie Ernaux, and why not myself, are women who have narrated the experience of abortion.

A country cannot be called free if women do not decide on their sexuality.

And this should also be taken into account by the famous Holy Father.
