"We deeply regret what happened in our bullring," Tamayo said in the statement, adding: "I want to ask all citizens who are in the area to please evacuate, the authorities are already attending to the emergency and the injured have been taken to hospitals. Please, let's evacuate, together let's help the emergency services so they can do their job."

For his part, the president of Colombia, Iván Duque, lamented the tragedy in El Espinal and said that they will request an investigation of the events.

No official cause for the collapse has been given, but Tamayo said in his statement that authorities "have already begun to investigate the causes of what happened."
