Rottach-Egern – The members of the DAV Tegernsee and numerous comrades-in-arms have rehabilitated further work on the Sieblisteig in Rottach-Egern.

Now the trail is safe again.

In a joint action, the Almwirtschaftsverein Oberbayern, the municipality of Rottach-Egern and the Tegernsee section of the German Alpine Association (DAV) repaired the hiking trail in the Sieblialm-Riedereck area in June.

As early as June 2020, sections of this path that were particularly susceptible to erosion were paved with coarse stones in a first step.

"However, it has been shown that hikers repeatedly avoid the side of the fortifications in the adjacent meadows and thus leave new traces of erosion," reports Carolin Machl, head of the DAV office in Tegernsee.

"The already thin topsoil is then further washed away by surface water running off." In order to remedy this problem, the coarse stones in the affected sections of the path were now additionally covered with gravel over a width of 40 centimetres.

Protect sensitive alpine soils from erosion

The alpine farmers Toni Maier, Sepp Kandlinger and Thomas Hörth, three employees of the Rottach Bauhof and three members of the Tegernsee section were involved in the work.

The work was coordinated to a large extent by Andreas Stecher, who is employed at the building yard and has also been supporting the Tegernsee section's path construction team with path warden Alfred Müller for many years.

The idea for this joint action came about during a preliminary meeting for the main alpine pasture inspection by the Almwirtschafts Verein Oberbayern, which will take place in August 2022 on the alpine pastures around the Risserkogel.

An intact network of paths is important to protect the sensitive alpine pasture soil from erosion in several respects:

  • For alpine farming, whose livelihood is based on the alpine pastures and which maintains this characteristic cultural landscape through grazing.

  • For the numerous visitors who use the hiking and alpine trails, who enjoy the Almidylle as a destination for excursions or who like to stop off at one or the other alpine pasture.

  • For communities and sections of the DAV whose core tasks include the preservation of the alpine path network.

More action on the Deriving Alm on the Risserkogel

The first chairman of the DAV Tegernsee section, Rainer Toepel, was also there and thanked everyone involved for the successful campaign: "Together with the Almwirtschafts Verein Oberbayern and the municipality of Rottach-Egern, we have made a further contribution to the event with our volunteers Preservation of the Sieblisteig achieved and a sign set for a cooperation between alpine farming and visitors."

Another such action is planned for the beginning of July in the area of the Ableitenalm on the Risserkogel.
