Fateful meeting: Bennett tends to retire - but Shaked and Kahana try to press Israel today

2022-06-26T19:07:44.283Z

Three right-wing leaders met with growing reports in the background of Bennett's intention to leave political life • Shaked is in favor of joining Netanyahu's right-wing bloc and Kahana is interested in forming a unity government

Against the background of the retirement thoughts, the outgoing Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, Minister Ayelet Shaked and Deputy Minister Matan Kahana met tonight (Sunday) to discuss what will happen to the right.

Bennett has not yet decided whether to retire, but his inclination seems to be there and he is now considering the appropriate time to do so.

On the other hand, Shaked and Kahana are trying to pressure Bennett to stay and claim that the right has the right to exist in the upcoming elections and that the number of seats that the polls predict can be increased.

In the scenario in which Bennett insists on retiring, control of the party will probably be transferred to Ayelet Shaked, in light of her many years of partnership with him.

In such a case, it is expected to break back into a right-wing bloc headed by Netanyahu.

Kahana also wants to inherit the leadership of the right-wing party.

Right-wing activists who remained supportive of the party until this moment said they did not want the right-wing move to be in Bibi's hands.

This is a clear message to Shaked's intentions however, it is not clear how this will affect Kahana's future.

Kahana received proposals from Center parties, and the center-right in the crumbling coalition, and if Bennett resigns, he will consider his steps.

Kahana is interested in succeeding the leadership of the right-wing party.

Right-wing activists who remain supporters of the party say until this moment that they do not want the right-wing to be in Bibi's hands.

This is also a clear message regarding Shaked's intentions.

Bennett's decision is also expected to affect the political future of MKs Abir Kara and Nir Auerbach.

In the scenario without Bennett, if the polls predict that Shaked will have a safe passage of the blocking percentage, the Likud will have an interest in supporting it, since it has the power to bring in votes from the soft right and enlarge the bloc.

In addition, Likud officials did not rule out the possibility that they would try to unite Shaked and Shikli if they expected that this would bring more votes to complete 61 seats for the united right-wing bloc, especially in light of Shekli's legal difficulty not being able to run in an existing party.

Shikli recently stated that "I will not cooperate with Matan Kahana and Shaked even if Bennett retires."
