Fear in Ramallah: Middle East Conference will hurt Palestinians Israel today

Abu Mazen visited King Abdullah at his palace in Amman • The king assured him that Jordan was still committed to a two-state solution • Abbas: "Know that wherever Jordan is, the Palestinian issue will always be present"

Abu Mazen fears: Convergence of Middle Eastern countries during a visit to Biden may push the Palestinian issue to the margins.

The chairman of the Palestinian Authority, Mahmoud Abbas, met today (Sunday) with the King of Jordan, Abdullah, at his palace in Amman.

"Jordan is always on the side of the Palestinian people and at all times. The only way to end the Israeli-Palestinian conflict is to resolve the two states, which will ensure an independent and sustainable Palestinian state on lines 67 and its capital East Jerusalem," the king said.

Abbas, for his part, noted that "wherever Jordan is, the Palestinian issue will always be present."

This statement by Abbas reflects the fear in Ramallah of convening a regional summit that will not put the Palestinian issue on the agenda during President Biden's forthcoming visit to the Middle East.

Reports of a possible establishment of a regional defense forum were reinforced in a CNBC interview with King Abdullah, during which he said he supported the establishment of a "Middle East NATO alliance."

Ramallah is concerned about the repression of the Palestinian issue, and they do not approve of the inter-Arab political shift that is taking place in the region because it does not focus on promoting political moves that will initiate a solution to the conflict.

This message was conveyed to the King of Jordan and other leaders in the region.

"Israel Today" learned that eight months ago, the Palestinians wanted to arrange a visit by PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas to Saudi Arabia, but this request was dissolved, and the bilateral meeting did not materialize.

Jordan has in the past week become a center of pilgrimage for Arab leaders who have visited the kingdom and held talks with King Abdullah, including the Saudi regent, and the emirate ruler.

This joins the feverish contacts and the recent skipping campaign of Arab leaders with their counterparts in the region, with in the background, the moves that are taking place behind the scenes in an effort to create a security-political forum in the region, in which Israel will play a leading role.

Also, another issue that came up in the conversation between the two leaders is the dissolution of the Knesset, "and the implications of this for achieving peace in the region."
