The French Energy Transition Ministry announced today its intention to resume electricity production from a coal-fired plant in the east of the country during the next winter to face the repercussions of the lack of Russian gas supplies and the disruption of the energy market.
And AFP quoted the ministry as saying in a statement today: There is a possibility to operate the power plant in Saint-Avold for a few additional hours if we need it next winter.
The ministry added: Coal electricity production will remain below one percent of the total production, stressing that Russian coal will not be used.
Germany, Austria and the Netherlands recently announced an increase in the use of coal, the most harmful fossil fuel for the climate, to compensate for the decline in Russian gas supplies to Europe.
The decision has alarmed the European Commission and environmental organizations, which have pointed to the risk of undermining the European Union's environmental ambitions.
