The world is visiting Markus Söder.

Or?

The prime minister uses the federal government's G7 summit specifically for self-promotion and for promoting Bavaria.

"Shameless", find his critics.

But so far the bill has worked.

Munich – Even in the life of Markus Söder, this is an extraordinary moment.

Air Force One rolls up, snipers lurk on the surrounding airport roofs, the mountain gunners stand in line to salute.

The Stadtkapelle Freising undeterred plays the Empress Sissi March alongside the roar of the government machine and the waiting military helicopter.

The US President walks down the stairs, grabs Söder's rights with one, no, with both hands.

G7 summit 2022 in Elmau: Biden talks about his visits to Bavaria

What the two tell each other in these minutes is quite banal.

Biden speaks of his visits to Bavaria and thanks him for the close connection even in times of crisis.

Söder greets, thanks, he even jokes: "My bavarian army," he says, pointing to the mountain riflemen.

What is much more important: The photo series from the red carpet really gives the impression that the most powerful man in the world is visiting Söder.

That's true, but only in part.

The G7 host is the federal government, i.e. the chancellor.

That means history wanted it differently, not Söder.

Olaf Scholz hardly ever appears in the white-blue maximum production on arrival.

It's half his own fault: Scholz would have been received with Bayern pomp, but decided - as those involved from the State Chancellery describe - to land inconspicuously without a tie and photographer.

The other half: Söder also likes to make the chancellor disappear.

In an official CSU tweet he welcomes the heads of state at the G7 summit, "Grüß Gott in Bayern" - but in the photo collage it is only G6, Scholz is simply not shown.

There is anger and malice for this on the Internet.

"Embarrassing," fumed Bavaria's SPD leader Florian von Brunn, it was more than a question of style.

When asked, Söder countered that Scholz was not a guest, but the "political host", and that they were in good contact.

The criticism was "far-fetched".

G7 summit 2022 in Elmau: Söder is simply not invited

Be that as it may - Söder does not set foot in the hermetically sealed Elmau Castle at the weekend because he is simply not invited - but is very present in the pictures from the start of the summit.

He also picks up the Macron couple from the plane.

"Dear Markus," says the French head of state and puts his hand on his arm.

In addition, the State Chancellery is setting up a small side summit in Munich on Sunday evening (although this has been coordinated with Berlin).

Söder invites the delegations to the residence, focusing on the extended circle with the invited states such as India, Indonesia and South Africa.

His dinner with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is about world politics after all.

For Söder, who has been a lot in his career but not a persevering foreign politician, this is a big stage.

As the summit progresses, Scholz will probably move into the spotlight;

Söder is only a side guest at the barbecue at the castle tonight.

However, his calculations will probably work out one way or another.

The greatest political risk for Bavaria as somehow co-host of the summit would be riots or an attack: police and security are a matter for the federal states.

That was okay until Sunday.

As in 2015, the summit also provides gigantic tourism PR for the travel destination Bavaria.

Not a drop of rain, a castle under a white-blue sky - well, Söder and Scholz can't do anything about that.
