G7 summit demonstration in Munich: 4000 instead of the expected 20,000 participants - and 3000 emergency services

Update from June 25, 3:27 p.m .:

Around two and a half hours after the official start of the announced large-scale demonstration at the G7 summit in Munich, the initial impression of the low number of participants continues.

The organizers spoke of 6,000 protesters, but the police only gave 4,000 participants.

At least 20,000 people were originally expected.

The police themselves were on site with 3,000 emergency services, and initially there were no incidents.

A spokeswoman for the organizers said that the reason for the low participation could not yet be assessed.

The organizer of the rally, Uwe Hiksch from the Friends of Nature, said it was well below "what we expected".

But it had been clear for about a week and a half that the mobilization wasn't that strong, Hiksch continued.

"We have the impression that a lot of people are unsettled by the war in Ukraine."

Especially in the red-green spectrum, which is usually mobilized for such a demo, there are currently many people who said: "Now is not the time to take a counter-position to the heads of government."

G7 summit demonstrations in Munich: "We are disappointed"

Update from June 25, 1:49 p.m .:

Around 20,000 participants were expected, but according to police information, only around 3,500 people initially appeared at the large-scale demonstration at the G7 summit in Munich on Saturday.

However, the demonstration is scheduled for several hours, so the numbers can still increase as the event progresses.

One participant was surprised by the currently low influx.

"We are disappointed," said 46-year-old Andrea from Greenpeace in Hanover to the German Press Agency.

It seems as if only organizations are on site, but no one from the population.

At 1:42 p.m., the Munich police announced on Twitter that the meeting on the Theresienwiese had now started.

The start of the major demonstration was originally scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

G7 summit in Elmau 2022: 13 billion euros needed to end hunger in the world by 2030

Update from June 25, 9:27 a.m.:

According to Welthungerhilfe, the G-7 countries must provide at least 13 billion euros each year in order to be able to defeat hunger in the world by 2030.

This emerges from an interview by Mathias Mogge, Secretary General of the aid organization, with the

Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung

(NOZ) before the G7 summit meeting that begins on Sunday.

According to Mogge, the situation is more dramatic than it has been for decades.

According to Welthungerhilfe, more than 800 million people are already suffering from chronic hunger.

"As a result of Corona, climate change, war and conflicts, this number could again exceed the billion mark," warned the Welthungerhilfe Secretary General.

G7 summit in Elmau 2022: The World Health Organization insists on financing the corona vaccination programs around the world

Update from June 25, 7.30 a.m .:

The World Health Organization (WHO) demands moral pressure from the federal government on the other industrialized countries at the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau.

It is about financing the corona vaccination and care programs around the world.

Germany is by far the largest contributor.

“The federal government must clearly say to the others: We paid our fair share, so do you,” said Bruce Aylward, who is responsible for corona coordination in the WHO management team, the German Press Agency.

Those who don't pay their share are free riders.

Because the federal government is the only country besides Canada that has paid its fair share, it cannot be afraid to speak from a position of moral authority.

Aylward praised the fact that fighting the global pandemic continues to be a priority for Germany despite the Ukraine crisis.

First report from June 24th:

The G7 summit in Elmau 2022 begins on Sunday (June 26th).

Then numerous topics are on the agenda of the heads of state of the seven leading industrial nations and democracies in the world.

This year's summit is taking place in Germany, and the federal government has called for a determined fight for more food security in advance.

G7 summit in Elmau 2022: Food security part of the agenda - Federal government calls for a determined fight

Ukraine and Russia are considered the "granaries of the world".

The Ukraine war therefore has far-reaching effects on the global food supply.

Because Russia is blocking the Black Sea ports, important grain deliveries are missing in many parts of the world.

Russia itself has not been a member of the summit since the Crimean invasion in 2014.

A quick solution to the problem of the Black Sea blockade is currently not in sight.

"Russia is deliberately using hunger as a weapon of war and is making the whole world hostage," said Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens) about Vladimir Putin's actions.

Experts also believe that military intervention is currently unenforceable.

The German government therefore warned before the G7 summit that the global hunger crisis would worsen and called for a determined fight for food security.

According to Baerbock, around 345 million people are threatened by food shortages due to drought and crop failures caused by climate change and as a result of the corona pandemic.

"But only Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine turned a wave into a tsunami," said the Green politician.

G7 summit in Elmau 2022: Grain exports from Ukraine - Özdemir for alternative ways

Ukraine actually ships wheat and other grain through the Black Sea ports, with Odessa leading the way.

In view of the stalemate there, Minister of Agriculture Cem Özdemir (Greens) now spoke out in favor of permanent alternative routes for grain exports from Ukraine.

As long as Russia's President Putin is in power, one must assume that the Black Sea is not a safe route.

It would also be a signal to calm down the world markets if larger quantities could be transported away safely.

According to the Minister of Agriculture, capacities on alternative routes are limited and expensive.

Around 20 million tons of grain are currently stored in Ukraine and are in danger of rotting.

Before Russia's war of aggression, Ukraine was exporting about five million tons of grain a month all over the world.

After the start of the war, exports fell to 350,000 tons, but according to the federal government they were back at 1.7 million tons in May.

In the short term, however, there is only limited potential for growth, according to Özdemir.

G7 participants are the countries USA, Canada, Great Britain, France, Italy, Japan and Germany.

For them, there are numerous other topics on the agenda over the two days.

Among other things, it should be about the fair distribution of corona vaccines.

Had more people been vaccinated, 600,000 lives would have been saved, a recent study found.
