An important rose disease is blackspot (Diplocarpon rosae), a common fungus that primarily affects roses.

It can spread quickly, especially in wet weather.

Before a pesticide is used if the infestation is too severe, there is a home remedy that can be used to combat blackspot in the case of a mild infestation: baking soda.

In principle, this is a cheap home remedy against pests in the garden.

Dissolving two tablespoons of baking soda (three to five tablespoons for severe infestations) in one liter of water and spraying the roses with the solution every ten to 14 days is said to help against blackspot.

Only spray the diseased areas.

A natural plant decoction made from field horsetail is also said to help fight blackspot and other garden pests.

Further measures against blackspot: Proper watering and ADR roses

The plant protection service of the North Rhine-Westphalia Chamber of Agriculture also recommends the following measures to prevent the aggressive fungal disease from spreading to roses:

  • Pick off diseased leaves as early as possible and dispose of them in the household waste (not in the compost!).

  • For new plantings, it is advisable to select the most robust rose varieties with the so-called ADR seal.

Because there are differences in the rose varieties in terms of susceptibility to the fungus, ADR roses are usually particularly resistant, productive and healthy.

This is especially true for bedding and ground cover roses.

  • Plant roses in a sunny location so that the leaves dry off quickly after rainfall.

Do not water the roses from above (especially not in the evening hours), as this greatly encourages fungal diseases such as blackspot.

  • A balanced, needs-based fertilization strengthens the plants, for example with wood ash, which contains many nutrients.

In order to discover blackspot early, you should regularly check your plants for an infestation from May onwards.

If the disease is unstoppable, you should treat the plants with the appropriate fungicides to prevent the problem from recurring the following year.
