On Sunday, the first day of the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau, the market in Garmisch-Partenkirchen will be put to the acid test.

But the police urged calm: nobody need be afraid.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen

– For the Garmisch-Partenkirchen market, the biggest test at the G7 summit is actually already on this Sunday.

Because with all the important statesmen who speak in Schloss Elmau - the summit meeting is really felt by the population right on the first day with the large demonstration.

The district office, as the approval authority, and the police, who are responsible for security, are expecting up to 3,000 participants.

Nobody knows what really happens.

"In any case, there will be major disabilities from Sunday afternoon," emphasizes Jürgen Thalmeier from the G7 press office of the state police.

A clear message: "If you don't necessarily have to go downtown on Sunday, you should avoid Garmisch-Partenkirchen."

In this news ticker there is all the information about the first day of the G7 summit.

What to tell the citizens?

Even from the point of view of the police, this question is not so easy to answer.

"It's a balancing act," assures Carolin Englert, spokeswoman at the G7 operations center.

“Of course we want to tell people to stay calm.

There really is no need to be afraid.” On the other hand, there are major restrictions around the demo train.

"It gets difficult from midday, especially because it's also the arrival day of the state guests." And ultimately there can be no guarantee that everything will be completely peaceful.

"It can be assumed that a small black block will come," confirms Englert.

But the police are prepared for that.

"There's a reason we're there with such a large contingent." Sometimes she can only marvel at the dimensions.

"From every window you look through, you only see the police." Only one thing is clear: "Better too much than too little," notes Thalmeier.

Police promise: There will be no pictures like the ones in Hamburg at the G20 meeting

In principle, there is no reason to be alarmed before the big demo.

“We won’t have the kind of images we are familiar with from the G20 in Hamburg,” says Englert with conviction.

This is not due to the intimidating Bavarian police - there are forces from all over Germany - but to the local conditions.

"You can't compare Garmisch-Partenkirchen with Hamburg," says Thalmeier.

Not even Munich can be put on the same level as the Hanseatic city in the north.

"We have a completely different environment here, completely different people." Even if opponents of the summit could arrive from far away at any time, there is not such a pronounced extremist scene in conservative Bavaria, emphasizes the police spokesman.

However, caution is always the best medicine.

"We are prepared for anything

As far as impairments in town are concerned, it will certainly be a little more uncomfortable in the center between the train station and Marienplatz on Sunday afternoon.

The meeting is from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.

"How long it takes, how fast the train is moving, how many people - we don't know any of that at the moment," says Englert.

One thing is certain: the entire route is strictly monitored.

However, it is not permanently blocked.

"You can imagine it like a traveling construction site," describes Thalmeier.

That means: If the demonstrators approach, it will be cordoned off there.

In any case, anyone who wants to approach the column must expect to be checked.

"This is not a carnival procession or a regional costume festival," warns Thalmeier, who sticks to his advice that it is better to avoid the center from midday.

Large demo before the G7 summit: Remove loose objects on the land along the demo route

The police spokesman has another tip for residents and property owners: All loose objects should be removed from the roadside.

So that they are not converted.

Thalmeier: "That also helps to keep the train peaceful." And that's what Englert and he are now assuming: "We still have no knowledge that there will be riots."
