Police officers also used batons.

Shortly before, demonstrators had ignited several smoke pots.

In this context, the police said that violations of the Explosives Act are now being investigated.

Update from June 25, 1:50 p.m.:

“The meeting on the Theresienwiese in Munich has now started,” the police write on Twitter.

The march of the G7 demonstrators begins.

According to ZDF reporter Peter Aumeier, a "black block" has also formed.

Overall, according to police estimates, only about 3,500 participants came to the G7 demo.

The Munich police spokesman Andreas Franken said about an hour after the start of the event on the Theresienwiese.

At least 20,000 people were originally expected.

A spokeswoman for the organizers said that an estimate was only possible after the start of the demonstration.

In the case of such demos lasting several hours, many participants often only join in the course of the event.

However, some activists were already amazed and surprised at the low number of participants.

"We are disappointed," said 46-year-old Andrea from Greenpeace in Hanover.

It seems as if only organizations are on site, but no one from the population.

"The weather isn't that bad," she said.

According to the police, more than the 20,000 registered participants could come to the large demonstration against the G7 summit on Saturday in good weather.

Munich's head of operations and police vice president Michael Dibowski expects, among other things, a black block.

He said that at the presentation of the police operational concept on Thursday (June 23).

He expects a strength up to a high three-digit number of people.

However, the mobilization is not as strong as at the G7 summit in 2015.

At that time, a total of around 35,000 participants came to the central demonstration in Munich.

The 2022 mobilization will mainly run across Germany.

The international mobilization could also be influenced by the subsequent NATO summit in Madrid and be less strong than in 2015, said Dibowski.

Around 3,000 police officers are on duty in Munich and should ensure that the demo runs peacefully.

A total of around 18,000 officers are deployed around the G7 summit - the police have rented a number of huts.

When the G7 participants arrive and during the demo on Saturday, traffic jams and disruptions are to be expected.

Dibowski called on the demonstrators to present their protest peacefully.

There is room for "creative and peaceful forms of demonstration".

However, the police vice president made it clear: “The Munich police will not tolerate disturbances caused by violence, damage to property and other violations of the law.”

Legitimate protest ends where criminal behavior begins.
