The Drainage Services Department has been actively promoting renewable energy and is committed to installing solar power generation systems in various sewage treatment and flood control facilities.

The Drainage Services Department has been actively promoting renewable energy and is committed to installing solar power generation systems in various sewage treatment and flood control facilities. As of the end of May this year, the DSD had installed 32 facilities under its management, including 15 sewage treatment plants and 15 sewage pumps. The solar power generation system is installed in the house and two flood storage facilities, and the space of the workshop is used to develop renewable energy.

Among them, the San Tin rainwater pumping station and stormwater storage tank in Yuen Long have installed three different types of solar power generation systems, including solar trees, floating solar power generation systems, and flexible and step-on solar power generation systems. The stormwater pumping station provides electricity; in order to beautify the environment and integrate the ecology, the department has also built an ecological floating island of about 100 square meters in the flood storage pond, and planted flowering plants to attract birds to stay.

The department estimates that the three sets of solar power installations can provide about 47,000 kWh of electricity a year, which is equivalent to the electricity consumption of 14 three-person households a year, and can reduce carbon emissions by about 32 metric tons per year.

If it passes the rainy season test this year, it will study expansion and application in other flood storage tanks.

Since the rural villages in Hong Kong are located in low-lying areas, the rainwater cannot be drained out of the way, and it is easy to cause flooding problems. Therefore, the Department launched the Village Flood Control Plan as early as the late 1980s, adding flood protection dikes in the villages to prevent rainwater from flowing into the villages, and also adding rainwater collection. The system temporarily collects rainwater in the flood storage tank. When the water level rises to the preset water level, the water pump of the pumping station will automatically turn on and pump the rainwater out of the drainage channel outside the flood control embankment.

The San Tin Stormwater Pumping Station and Flood Storage Tank is one of the 27 village flood control schemes currently in operation by the Department. The purpose is to reduce the flooding of Tsing Lung, Fan Tin, On Lung, San Lung, Tung Chun Wai, Wing Ping and Yan Shou Wai. Flooding risk in 7 low-lying villages.

In addition to solving the flooding problem, the DSD has also actively utilized the plant space to develop renewable energy in recent years. At present, the largest solar photovoltaic system in Hong Kong was put into operation at the Siu Ho Wan Sewage Treatment Works at the end of 2016.

Lu Zhenlong, a senior engineer of the Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Department of the Drainage Services Department, said that different solar power generation devices were also installed in the San Tin stormwater pumping station and the stormwater storage tank. It has the largest area, and the San Tin Stormwater Pumping Station is also one of the sites visited by the Department’s ecological conservation guided tour, so we hope to promote the concept of carbon reduction and sustainable development to the public through the installation of a solar power generation system.”

There are two solar trees in the Xintian rainwater pump house. Each solar tree is composed of 12 flexible solar panels, each with an installed capacity of 360 watts. LED lights at the bottom of the branches are illuminated, and three wireless chargers are installed on the seats of each solar tree, so that the citizens participating in the guided tour can charge their mobile phones with solar power.

The two solar trees in the San Tin Stormwater Pumping Station are one of the solar power generation installations. They were exhibited at the Drainage Services Department's exhibition area at the 2018 Hong Kong Flower Show. use.

Lv Zhenlong pointed out that each solar tree is composed of 12 flexible solar panels, each with an installed capacity of 360 watts, and the electricity generated will be stored in the battery, which will supply power to the LED strips at the bottom of the branches when the sky is dark. There are also 3 wireless chargers installed on the seats of each solar tree, and citizens participating in the guided tour can charge their mobile phones with solar power.

In addition to the solar tree, there is also a flexible solar power generation system composed of 108 solar photovoltaic panels on the cover of the screw pump groove of the water inlet of the Xintian rainwater pumping station, with an installed power generation capacity of about 9 kilowatts. Curved and light, it is very suitable for installation on the slot cover that is not suitable for load-bearing; another step-on solar power generation system installed on the pedestrian passage of the maintenance platform of the rainwater pump room is composed of 92 solar photovoltaic panels, and its installed capacity of power generation About 2 kilowatts, the step-on solar panels can bear the weight of an average adult and have anti-skid functions. The two power generation systems can generate a total of 10,000 kWh of electricity per year.

The floating solar power generation system needs to adjust the slope to reduce the growth of algae so as not to affect the residential buildings

As for the floating solar power generation system at the San Tin Stormwater Storage Pond, it is the DSD's pilot scheme to explore the installation of floating or other suitable types of solar power generation systems in appropriate river channels.

The floating solar power generation system was launched in October last year, and was installed and put into use by the end of March this year. It is a small-scale floating solar power generation system consisting of 70 solar photovoltaic panels with an area of about 300 square meters. It is about 37 kilowatts and is expected to generate 37,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year.

Lu Zhenlong pointed out that there are many considerations when designing floating solar installations, such as whether it will damage the ecological environment and affect nearby residential buildings due to reflection.

Lu Zhenlong pointed out that there are many factors to consider when designing floating solar installations, such as whether it will damage the ecological environment and affect nearby residential buildings due to reflection. Afterwards, the solar panels of Yijia were tilted 5 degrees to the north.” He pointed out that there are 16 concrete bricks each weighing 8 tons under the solar panels for stability, “so it should be stable in the wind and rain.” He pointed out that the floating solar energy The slabs use water surface space and do not occupy precious land resources. "They also help to reduce algae growth and reduce carbon emissions when they float in the water." Installed in flood storage tanks in other areas.

Lv Zhenlong revealed that the three solar power generation systems can provide an average of 3,000 kWh of electricity per month for the use of the Xintian rainwater pumping station. The annual electricity consumption of a three-person household can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 32 metric tons per year (that is, the carbon removal of about 1,400 plants).

The preparations for the pilot project of the floating solar photovoltaic system at Shing Mun River in Shatin have also entered the final stage.

As an early part of the plan, the department will install a small simulated floating solar photovoltaic system on the water surface upstream of the near Lek Yuen Bridge to collect data to assess the robustness of the system. The installation is expected to start in early July this year.

The San Tin Stormwater Storage Pond is adjacent to the Mai Po Nature Reserve. In order to achieve ecological harmony, the Drainage Services Department also built an ecological floating island with an area of about 100 square meters in the stormwater storage tank in March this year. The main component structure is about 0.5 meters thick. It is composed of polyester fiber layer, plant fiber layer and EVA glue buoyancy layer, and the outer layer is wrapped with geotextile.

Yu Zhiqiang, a senior engineer of the New Territories North Drainage Department of the Drainage Services Department, pointed out that there are plants that bloom in different seasons on the floating island, including white-backed vines, blue snowflakes, tung flower trees and manjusri orchid, hoping to beautify the environment and attract migratory birds to stay, if necessary The plant species can also be replaced, and the shape of the floating islands will also be considered in the future, and ecological floating islands will be set up in flood storage tanks in other areas.
