Al-Qamishli-SANA

The profession of plumber, which relies on re-manufacturing and repairing metal tools such as jugs and kerosene pipes, is a well-known traditional craft in Syria, and despite its age, it has regained part of its presence in people’s daily lives as a result of the current economic conditions. .

Among the old craftsmen in this profession is Claudius Benjamin Hanna, son of the city of Qamishli, who spent 32 years in the gold market in the city, accompanied by the hammer, with his hand bending the metal to serve his work, which he sees as one of the necessities of life and the source of his livelihood that he does not abandon.

Hanna described his profession during his interview with SANA reporter as rare and old that preceded the manufacture of the machine and the emergence of designers and engineers in the field of industry, pointing to the small number of people who master it from the island’s people because it requires effort and patience, and despite that he clings to it because he sees that the person who works hard and works hard in order to obtain a living He is more valued in society than an idle person who does not work.

Hanna pointed out that his knowledge in his field of work made him deal with aluminum, hammer and anvil gently until he made many utensils and tools that serve people in his area, including teapots, traditional milk pails, pot floors, wood heaters, fireplaces, and water tanks with a capacity of up to 300 liters without the need for an electric machine. .

Hanna pointed out that the approval of his customers for the product of his work and their positive reactions after seeing their tools that are suitable for use again increases his activity and removes the fatigue of all the working hours he incurred during the day, indicating that this profession is practiced by a few of the people of the region, which threatens its extinction, and therefore other people must work in it.

For his part, Abu Ahmed Khalil Al-Alawi, from the Qamishli countryside, said during his presence in Claudius’s shop that many people from the countryside are looking for a plumber to repair their tools, especially as they use cooking and heating on wood, which sometimes causes holes in the aluminum pots, and in order not to have to buy new tools. They take the plumber's way to repair their tools and they are ready for use again, pointing to the need for more people working in this profession to maintain them, especially under the current circumstances.
