The rain storm that hit Lattakia Governorate during the past two days caused great damage to the agricultural sector in the areas north of Lattakia city, up to Shabtalia, ending in the areas of Mashqita, Ain Al-Bayda and Khirbet Solas, with minor damages recorded in the countryside of Jableh and Qardaha.
The Director of Agriculture in Lattakia, Engineer Basem Doba, said in a meeting held by the Directorate today to count the damage of the storm, that it was very large and unprecedented, especially with regard to the uprooting of large and perennial trees, the fall of olive and lemon fruits, and the breaking of tree branches, in addition to the damage of a large number of fruitful trees in Mashqita and Ain al-Bayda. For the fruits of pears, almonds and peaches in a number of orchards Al Haffa and Saraya.
Doba added: Several damages were recorded to beekeeping hives and their migration from them, as well as damage to greenhouses in Burj Al-Qasab, Burj Islam, Al-Bassa, Al-Shamiya and Karsana, and 15 sheep were killed in the Ain Al-Sharqiya region as a result of a lightning strike.
He pointed out that the directorate's cadres worked urgently to open roads, remove trees that impede movement and traffic, and help restore damaged infrastructure from electricity and telephone networks by presenting many of its mechanisms to the concerned authorities to remove the effects of the storm.
Doba called on the affected farmers to review the extension units as of tomorrow and submit a request for compensation for damages by the Drought and Disaster Mitigation Fund at the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, provided that the value of the damages is 50 percent of the entire crop and above, pointing out that 5 survey teams will be formed In addition to the indicative units that survey on the ground to fully calculate the damage within several days.
