Thousands of people demonstrated in the Spanish capital Madrid today against the North Atlantic Treaty Organization "NATO", ahead of the upcoming summit of the alliance between 28-30 of this month.
Reuters reported that about five thousand protesters gathered in a demonstration in Madrid organized under the slogan "For Peace .. No NATO" and carried banners saying: "No to war... No to NATO" and "NATO bases out of Spain" and "Build schools and hospitals" instead of military expenditures.
The demonstrators chanted slogans condemning the armaments, stressing that the increase in defense spending in Europe, which was urged by the alliance, constitutes a threat to peace.
Representatives of the Spanish organizations that organized the demonstration described the NATO summit that will be held in Madrid as a “pro-war summit.” One of the protesters said: “I am tired of arms trading and killing people.. The solution they are proposing is more weapons and wars and we are always paying the price for them..No to NATO.” .No army bases..let the Americans go and leave us.”
It is scheduled to meet the leaders of NATO member states later this month amid tight security measures, and NATO is expected to study Finland and Sweden's requests to join the alliance.
The Spanish government had announced earlier that it had spent about 50 million euros to organize the NATO summit, which will be hosted in the capital, and which will be attended by heads of state and government from 44 countries, in addition to the ministers of foreign affairs and defense.
