Martina has resigned.
Simply that way.
She leaves with no prospect of a new job.
Her boss Jürgen can only speculate about her reasons, she is silent about it, mumbling something about a crisis of meaning.
Jürgen was caught cold by the termination of his competent, motivated and highly valued employee.
This loss is painful for him and his team.
His company, a supplier to the automotive industry, now has to look for a new employee as quickly as possible.
That will not be easy.
Managers are currently experiencing these or similar moments in many companies.
As a result of the corona pandemic, a wave of layoffs known as the “Great Resignation” seems to be sweeping through western industrialized countries.
In the US alone, around 47.8 million employees left their jobs in 2021 – a record number.
The trend continues this year in the States, with around 3 to 4 million employees resigning on average each month in the first few months of 2022, and US companies had more than 11 million job openings in early 2022.
There are still no comparable figures in Germany, but there are some indications.
On the one hand, the number of vacancies is constantly increasing, and the shortage of skilled workers in sectors such as logistics, nursing or crafts is the dominant issue.
A number of surveys have shown that the willingness to change jobs among employees in the DACH countries has increased significantly - according to a recent Xing/Forsa survey by 12 percent to 37 percent among Germans and even 57 percent among Swiss.
Whether the employees will also realize their intentions is not yet foreseeable.
