And what a castle.

Downton Abbey is actually called

Highclere .

.

Located in Hampshire, 90 kilometers east of London, this architectural gem takes the form it knows today thanks to renovations carried out in 1842 by Sir Charles Barry, known for having led the reconstruction of the Palace of Westminster .

Large living rooms, library and dining room that we see in the series are open to visitors as well as some of the 300 rooms of the monument, the kitchens and the servants' quarters.

Visitors can also walk through the 400 hectares of wooded parks, and stop at the Etruscan temple to admire the view of the castle, as the characters like to do in the series.

From the snowy plains of the North to the steppes of Essos and the Mediterranean landscapes of Dorne, the variety of landscapes in the

Game of Thrones

universe forced the creators of the series to shoot in all four corners of the world.

But many scenes in the HBO-produced series were filmed in Northern Ireland.

Starting with

Castle Ward

, to the southwest of the region.

This 18th-century castle hosted many outdoor scenes from the first two seasons.

The historic site, to be visited for its eccentric mansion mixing Gothic and Palladian styles, puts online a map allowing to better find the places appearing in the scenes of the series, like the fall of Bran from the tower of Winterfell, the tournament between Gregor Clegane and Loras Tyrell or the arrival of Robert Baratheon at the Starks.

But many scenes were filmed in Titanic Studios, in County Down 30 minutes south of Belfast, where the series' sets were recreated.

The renamed

Game of Thrones Studio Tour

site , open to the public since February 2022, allows fans to enter the Iron Throne Room, the Winterfell Crypts or the Hall of Faces.
