The G7 participants joke about one who is not invited: Vladimir Putin.

Canada's prime minister makes fun of the most famous image of the Kremlin boss.

Elmau/Garmisch-Partenkirchen - Eight years ago, the G7 family was one member richer.

At the meetings of the world's most important industrial countries, Russia was also at the table.

However, because the country around its President Vladimir Putin did not follow the rules of the other members, it was expelled from the group.

G7 instead of G8.

The relationship between the remaining states and Russia was at least cracked when Putin annexed Crimea in 2014.

The Russian invasion of Ukraine completely shattered relations.

At the moment it is hard to imagine that Russia will find its way back into the former family.

Russia is not present at the G7 summit in Elmau – but it is an issue nonetheless.

The group poked fun at Vladimir Putin on Sunday.

G7 summit in Elmau: Trudeau and Johnson - group jokes about Putin

Just before their first working session, the G7 leaders joked about the Russian president.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was the last to join the round at Schloss Elmau on Sunday afternoon, as can be seen on television pictures.

In view of the high temperatures, he asked whether jackets were to be removed or not, adding: "We all have to show that we are tougher than Putin."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau replied, among other things: Riding shirtless, you have to do that.

He alluded to a well-known photo of Putin in such a pose.

The quotes were recorded by camera crews who were briefly allowed to film in the room before the start of the G7 round.

In 2009, Putin was photographed shirtless on horseback as he rode through the southern Siberian Republic of Tuva.

G7 summit in Elmau: Scholz talks about Putin's "brutal war"

Far from the small jokes, Russia is also the subject of the meeting at Schloss Elmau.

Dealing with the Ukraine war is one of the items on the G7 agenda.

At the weekend there were renewed Russian rocket attacks on the Ukrainian capital Kyiv, which Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the other participants at the summit condemned.

"We have now noticed again that this is a brutal war that Putin is waging, with rocket attacks on houses in Kyiv," said Scholz.
