G7 summit in Elmau: billions package for developing countries - attack on China

Update from June 26, 5.40 p.m .:

Olaf Scholz and Joe Biden have just appeared in front of the press.

With the other participants of the G7 summit they announced a "partnership for global infrastructure and investment".

It is about supporting developing countries, for example on climate change, strengthening women's rights, better health care and digitization.

A “value-based” alternative to investing in China is needed.

The G7 countries want to counter China's growing influence in developing countries with an investment program totaling 600 billion dollars.

This sum should be “mobilized” over the next five years to finance infrastructure projects in poorer countries, the White House announced on Sunday at the G7 summit in Schloss Elmau.

According to EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, the Europeans want to mobilize 300 billion euros for the "Partnership for Global Infrastructure", the USA 200 billion euros.

G7 summit in Elmau: States want to compete with China

Update from June 26, 5:20 p.m .:

The G7 group wants to compete with China with a global infrastructure initiative.

At their summit at Schloss Elmau, the heads of state and government of the G7 would formally launch a "Partnership for Global Infrastructure", the White House announced on Sunday.

The project, which was announced last year, is intended to be an alternative to the "New Silk Road" project launched by China in 2013, with which the country is opening up new trade routes to Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia.

Update from June 26, 4:30 p.m.:

Shortly before their first working session, the G7 heads of state and government joked about someone who is not in Elmau: Vladimir Putin.

In view of the high temperatures, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson asked whether jackets were to be taken off or not, and added: "We all have to show that we are tougher than Putin." Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau replied, among other things: Riding naked Upper body, you have to do that.

He alluded to a well-known photo of Putin in such a pose.

In the meantime, this is how things continue in Schloss Elmau.

    cultural program

Update from June 26, 3:46 p.m.:

For the partners of the G7 heads of government, there is traditionally a framework program at the G7 summit – the so-called G7 partner program.

On Sunday afternoon, Nordic walking was on the agenda with ski stars Christian Neureuther and his daughter-in-law, ex-biathlete Miriam Neureuther.

Miriam Neureuther even had her baby with her in a stretcher, as can be seen in the group photo.

Her child with Felix Neureuther - it is the third of the two athletes - was born at the end of April.

However, there are only four women.

US First Lady Jill Biden did not accompany her husband to the G7 summit in Elmau.

Italy's Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Canada's Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida also came to Bavaria without their wives.

And the husband of EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen is also missing.

The partner program is therefore only Brigitte Macron, the wife of the French President, Boris Johnson's wife Carrie, Amélie Derbaudrenghien, the wife of EU Council President Charles Michel and hostess Britta Ernst, the wife of Chancellor Olaf Scholz.

It is her first major appearance as First Lady.

Update from June 26, 3:10 p.m .:

In his first press conference at the G7 summit, Scholz was appalled by the Russian rocket attacks on the Ukrainian capital of Kiev.

"We have now noticed again that this is a brutal war that Putin is waging, with rocket attacks on houses in Kyiv," he said.

"This shows that it is right to stand together and support the Ukrainians in defending their country, their democracy, their freedom to self-determination."

Update from June 26, 2:55 p.m .:

The first working session of the G7 summit was about the global economy, Scholz said in his press conference.

"All G7 countries are concerned about the crises we are currently dealing with," said Scholz.

You face big challenges.

"But I am very, very, very confident that we will be able to send out a very clear signal of unity and decisive action from this summit."

The second working session on Sunday afternoon will deal with investments in global infrastructure.

This also includes global health, such as the corona pandemic.

In the evening there would be detailed and confidential talks on security policy.

"We have to work on a security architecture in the world that secures peace and does not become more and more dangerous and risky." The discussions at the first working meeting went "very well" and he is sure that things will continue like this.

"Germany and the United States will always act together when it comes to security issues in Ukraine," announced Scholz.

In international relations, "not everything is sunshine and roses", unlike today in Elmau, according to Scholz.

So far, the energy crisis and inflation have been discussed intensively.

"We know that there is something to be done." Actual communication with one another is of enormous importance in international relations.

Update from June 26, 12:15 p.m .:

G7 summit 2022 in Elmau: Boris Johnson praises Scholz for action in the Ukraine war - "I would never have believed in my life..."

Update from June 26, 11:51 a.m .:

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson has praised Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s (SPD) actions against Russia in the Ukraine war.

"I would never have believed in my life that a German chancellor would be so committed," said Johnson before the start of the G7 summit in Elmau.

Scholz sent weapons to the Ukrainians and took a hard line with Moscow despite Germany's heavy reliance on Russian gas.

Germany now faces "real pressure" and needs to get its gas from other sources, Johnson said.

"But they do.

You make an effort.

They make the sacrifice (...) because they realize that the price of freedom is worth paying.”

At the same time, Johnson warned of a general "tiredness among the population and politicians" with regard to the Russia sanctions.

So far, however, the West has shown in the G7 and NATO that it is united.

"To maintain that unity, to implement it, we need really honest conversations about the implications of what's happening: the pressures that individual friends and partners and their populations are feeling - whether it's on the cost of energy or food."

Updated June 26th.
