Continuing to help Ukraine and at the same time maintaining NATO unity are Joe Biden's two objectives at the Madrid summit.
If the Russian attack strengthened the Alliance by bringing it back to its original mission, and saw America reconnect with its role of protector of the European continent, the prolongation of the conflict and the aggravation of its economic consequences could affect this unity. West, as well as Washington's ability to provide the same level of assistance.
"This summit is a very important geopolitical moment,
" said Charles Kupchan, analyst at the Council on Foreign Relations and professor of international relations at Georgetown University.
It will have to address both the issue of military aid to Ukraine and the defense of Europe, and the impact of the war on domestic politics, both in the United States and in the European countries."
