On Wednesday, the city council is to decide on the planned tunnel in the north of Munich, which is to connect Schleissheimer Strasse and thus the Research and Innovation Center (FIZ) of the car manufacturer BMW to the A99 motorway.

The resistance to the project is great – opponents of the tunnel demonstrated yesterday at Marienplatz.

"We call on the city hall coalition and in particular the SPD to stop this crazy project in times of the climate crisis," says Richard Mergner, chairman of the Bund Naturschutz.

The green-red town hall government actually buried the project in their coalition agreement, but the comrades recently changed their minds – much to the annoyance of those opposed to the tunnel.

Opponents speak of a "BMW tunnel"

According to Merger, there are enough examples of how a livable city center can be designed - cities like Amsterdam, Copenhagen or Paris, for example.

“Unfortunately, Munich is still light years away from that.

With the BMW feeder, this backward-looking transport policy would be further cemented.”

Alternative for the tunnel in Hasenbergl: expansion of the northern railway ring

The tunnel opponents also have another idea to better connect BMW.

“Instead, we advocate activating and upgrading the north ring of the railway for freight traffic as well as for public transport,” says Kurt Schiemenz from Naturefriends Munich.

However, effective noise protection for residents living near the railway must be included from the start.

But one thing is certain for Schiemenz: "We don't need another gateway for road traffic in the north of Munich!"

Agreeing to tunnel is considered relatively safe

Despite the protest, the city council's approval of the project is relatively certain.

In the coalition council, the Greens and the SPD had agreed that the comrades with the CSU and FDP could vote for the tunnel without jeopardizing their joint cooperation.
