Markus Söder doesn't want the most powerful men in the world to forget beautiful Bavaria even after they have left the G7 summit in Elmau - and gives them Bavarian gifts.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen – Markus Söder (CSU), the Prime Minister of Bavaria, used the 2022 G7 summit in Elmau diligently to advertise Bavarian traditions – and earned a lot of malice for it.

The customs are simply part of the lifestyle in Bavaria and the guests "really liked them", Söder replied to his critics undeterred.

The summit participants Biden and Co. are now also getting Bavarian gifts to take home - whether they like it or not.

G7 summit 2022 in Elmau: Bavarian backpacks for the most powerful men in the world

The G7 summit in Germany is taking place for the second time this year at Schloss Elmau in Bavaria.

Markus Söder can be accused of many things, but not that he doesn't love his homeland.

The G7 participants had hardly set foot on the ground at Munich Airport when they were greeted with a Bavarian potpourri of lederhosen, traditional jackets and dirndls.

Mountain riflemen and people wearing traditional costumes saluted US President Joe Biden, who greeted the world press with a beaming smile.

Now Markus Söder apparently wants to make sure that the most powerful men in the world don't forget the state of Bavaria even when they leave.

"Bavarian backpacks like this go on a world tour: All participants of the G7 summit will receive a backpack full of Bavarian specialties from us," wrote the Bavarian Prime Minister on Twitter on Monday and also revealed something about the content.

“We are world famous for food.

Inside are sausage, cheese, sweets and Schafkopf cards.

Bayern should be remembered well, ”said Söder’s wish.

The backpacks will only be given to an “exclusive circle” of the summit participants, i.e. the G7 heads of state and government and their partners, a spokesman said on Monday and added further details about the content.

Drinks and a gingerbread heart are also included in the backpack.

The assumption is that the "drink" from Bavaria could be beer - a crown cap can be seen clearly in the picture shared by Söder.

The comment followed promptly: "Alcohol-free beer?

Who came up with the cheese?” asked one outraged Twitter user.

A look at the Oktoberfest shows: for some Bavarians, non-alcoholic beer may play a subordinate role in Bavarian customs.

"Bavaria is really embarrassing," scoffs another user and another commented on the guest gift: "Anyone who wants can buy something like that at the airport." While some speak of a "waste of tax money", others assume that it is with total costs for the G7 summit of around 160 million euros, a couple of rucksacks would no longer matter.

Alluding to Söder's appearance during the corona pandemic, another Twitter user hopes that the gifts for Biden and Co. will also include an FFP2 mask with the Bavarian coat of arms and adds: "Anything else would be a disappointment."

Who knows, maybe one or the other head of state will soon be seen hiking through the Spanish capital of Madrid with a Bavarian backpack.

The NATO summit will take place there immediately after the G7 summit.

If boredom sets in, Biden, Macron and Co. can then play a round of Schafkopf.
