Around Schloss Elmau, however, it was assumed that Jill Biden would accompany her husband.
She finally attended the 2021 G7 summit in St. Ives, UK.
However, when US President Joe Biden arrived in Bavaria at the weekend, the First Lady was missing.
Her spokesman initially gave no information on the reasons for her absence.
It is now clear: Jill Biden is in Madrid instead of in Elmau.
She landed in the Spanish capital on Sunday evening and was received there by Queen Letizia on Monday.
The background is the NATO summit starting on Thursday, at which Joe Biden will also take part.
Until then, smaller appointments such as a visit to a cancer center are on the agenda for his wife.
Jill Biden is committed to the fight against cancer in the USA and is the founder of the breast cancer foundation Biden Breast Health.
On Monday afternoon she met Begoña Gómez, the wife of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, in Moncloa, the seat of the Spanish government.

G7 summit in Elmau: partner program for the women of Scholz and Macron
A number of activities are planned for the First Ladies around Schloss Elmau.
Hiking in the foothills of the Alps was already on the G7 agenda on Sunday.
Together with the former ski racer Christian Neureuther and his daughter-in-law, the biathlete Miriam Neureuther (née Gössner), the G7 wives went to the Ferchensee.
On Monday, the partners will meet a master violin maker and talk to climate change researchers.
In addition, there is an appointment with the Olympic youth group Biathlon Weidenfels on the G7 schedule.
A total of four women are involved in the partner program.

So Jill Biden will stay away from Schloss Elmau.
In Madrid, 1,400 kilometers from Garmisch-Partenkirchen, it still created a bit of a summit atmosphere.
On television you could see how Biden's car caravan with around 30 vehicles drove up to the relatively small castle on the outskirts of Madrid.
Joe Biden had also chosen this conspicuous journey to Bavaria.
Now it has become known why the US President did not fly.
