Thunderstorms: lightning and hailstones cause damage in the East

Several departments in eastern France were hit by thunderstorms and hailstorms overnight from Sunday to Monday. A

Eastern France was hit by violent storms and hail this Sunday evening.

In the morning, eight departments had been placed on orange alert by Météo France: Bas-Rhin, Haut-Rhin, Vosges, Haute-Saône, Territoire de Belfort, Doubs, Jura and Ain.

In the evening, hailstones almost five centimeters in diameter fell, according to BFMTV, inevitably causing a lot of damage, especially on skylights and cars, reports France Bleu.

The glass roof of a building in the Territoire de Belfort gave way and roofs were also damaged.

Firefighters intervened about sixty times in the Territoire de Belfort and Doubs, mainly for damage caused by hail on industrial sites.

Hundreds of lightning strikes

In Haut-Rhin and Bas-Rhin, the emergency services carried out nearly a hundred interventions, mainly for flooded cellars, but did not find any major damage, still according to local radio.

The hail then hit the Vosges, a little later in the night.

In addition to hail, the eastern departments of France were also hit by the storm, with more than 800 lightning strikes in just two hours.

A man was burned in the forearm after being struck by lightning while watching the storm from his balcony, reports France Bleu.
