According to the EU Commission President, Russia must suffer a “strategic defeat” in Ukraine. In addition, Ursula von der Leyen is in favor of "telling Vladimir Putin to his face what we think of him".

EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen gave two TV interviews on the sidelines of the G7 summit at Schloss Elmau in Bavaria and spoke above all about Russia's war of aggression in Ukraine.

In the ARD "Tagesthemen" she explained: "I am firmly convinced that President Putin can no longer win this war."

Von der Leyen said Putin must suffer a "strategic defeat" in Ukraine.

Ukraine decides for itself whether and how it wants to negotiate.

"But the mere fact of how bravely Ukraine defends itself - but the democracies of this world also stand up against the aggressor - already shows that Putin can no longer win this war."

In addition, von der Leyen spoke out against a boycott of the G20 summit in the fall - even if Putin were to attend the next meeting.

"We have to think very carefully about whether we paralyze the entire G20, I'm not advocating it," said von der Leyen of the ZDF "heute journal".

"In my opinion, the G20 is too important, also for the developing countries, the emerging countries, for us to let this body be destroyed again by Putin."

The next summit of the 20 most important industrialized and emerging countries will take place on the Indonesian island of Bali in mid-November.

The group also includes Russia, so Putin's participation is possible.

It is important to "tell Putin to his face what we think of him and what we think of this type of action," said von der Leyen, referring to Russia's war of aggression against Ukraine.

»One thing is very clear: there will be no ›business as usual‹, i.e. not normality.«

At the G7 summit, the participants agreed to support Ukraine for as long as it was necessary, said von der Leyen.

“Because this is about whether the democracies will prevail, or whether the aggressor who brutally invaded Ukraine will prevail.”
