Monsignor Walter Waldschütz is known for being blessed with an almost inexhaustible energy.

On Tuesday (June 28) the leader of the parish association Tegernsee-Egern-Kreuth celebrates his 70th birthday - apparently with a normal workload, as he explains in a short interview.

Monsignor Waldschütz, how will you spend your birthday?

Like every Tuesday, we have a work meeting in the pastoral team at 10 a.m., at 2 p.m. I have a baptismal talk, and at 7 p.m. we celebrate a thanksgiving service.

Then I invite a few people, close relatives, acquaintances and companions from the individual stages of life to the beer garden.

So a little birthday party after all?

I'm actually not a birthday party, but you still can't get by.

Tomorrow is 'Peter and Paul', a church dedication day.

Celebrating a service the night before, which is customary in church, is a good way to say thank you to my parents and to God.

You should retire at the age of 70.

But you have already extended.

I have agreed to continue with all tasks as before until July 2024.

What comes after that, whether I'll stick on for another year, I can't say right now.

What are the main tasks of the church at the moment?

For now, I will remain parish leader and also trauma therapist.

Then I want to show people in the difficult times of the church that it is also about questions of meaning and that the church is more than what you always hear.

How would you describe the state of your parish?

We are a group of people who go their own way together and trustingly.

I get so much positive feedback and in that sense you have to empower people.

What does private citizen Walter Waldschütz want for his birthday?

Above all, health and energy.

I want to make sure that I'm fine, only then will other people be fine too.

You are known to be blessed with tremendous energy and also work nights.

Yes, that's right.

During the day I'm there for those who need me, at night from 10 p.m. I'm free to do my work.

My father always said: If you enjoy your work, you can have many happy hours.
