The police rescued 72 puppies from a van in Bavaria.

The animals were supposed to go to Portugal - and probably wouldn't have survived the journey.

Waidhaus – The police rescued 72 puppies from a van in the Upper Palatinate.

The Bavarian branch of the German Animal Welfare Association reports on the June 25 incident.

Waidhaus (Bavaria): 72 puppies rescued from transport – “considerable risk of injury”

Accordingly, in Waidhaus (district of Neustadt an der Waldnaab) an official over Traces

registered animal transport coming from Slovakia checked.

At first glance, the papers appeared to be in order, but a closer inspection revealed "significant defects".

“In the transporter there were 72 puppies in cages that were much too small, some of them broken and stacked on top of one another.

The boxes posed a significant risk of injury for the animals," says the state association's press release.

The animals were to be sold in Portugal.

“Even after the relatively short distance, five animals had to be treated in an emergency. They were dehydrated and apathetic and had to be taken out of the transporter.

The journey to Portugal would have meant certain death,” the national association is certain.

Among the dogs of various breeds there were also docked animals.

Docking, i.e. the surgical removal of tail vertebrae or the entire tail, is prohibited in Germany.

Many of the animals also had parasite infestations.

“Contrary to the information in the vaccination cards, most of the animals are under twelve weeks old.

As a result, they lack the legally stipulated rabies protection for transport.

It is only from this age that transport across national borders, including within the EU, is permitted with a valid rabies vaccination," reports the national association.

Police rescue puppies from vans: dogs distributed to animal shelters

All animals were confiscated by the official veterinarian and quarantine was ordered.

The puppies were distributed to several animal shelters in Bavaria.

Criminal charges were filed against the transporters for violations of the Animal Welfare Act and the Animal Welfare Transport Ordinance.

There are both criminal and administrative offenses.

“Our thanks go to the official veterinarian and the police officers who prevented the transport from continuing.

The self-evident willingness to help and commitment of our Bavarian animal shelters and the excellent crisis management of the state association under Andreas Brucker in this mission once again contributed to saving animal lives,” said state association president Ilona Wojahn in the message.
